Manager, Infection Prevention and Control

Overview and Purpose of the Role:

Reporting to Director, Quality, Safety & Enterprise Risk, this role is responsible for the planning, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of infection prevention and control practices at the centre. This leadership role ensures compliance with provincial and federal legislation, accreditation standards, and best practices to protect patients, staff, and visitors from healthcare-associated infections. This is also an exciting opportunity to be a part of the building process for a new electronic medical record (EMR) system.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and oversee a comprehensive Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) program, including policies, protocols, surveillance systems, and training initiatives
  • Provide and promote patient/family educational materials relevant to IPAC and health promotion
  • Monitor and analyze infection trends, conduct risk assessments, and recommend interventions to mitigate transmission
  • Ensure adherence to Public Health Ontario (PHO), Ministry of Health, and Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) guidelines, as well as CSA and Accreditation Canada standards
  • Lead and support outbreak investigations and response in collaboration with internal departments and external public health partners
  • Provide expert consultation and education to staff, physicians, and leadership on infection prevention strategies, including sterilization, reprocessing, PPE use, hand hygiene, and environmental cleaning
  • Coordinate audits and compliance checks, reporting results to leadership and guiding continuous improvement initiatives
  • Stay current with evolving regulations, evidence-based practices, and technological advances in infection control, adapting policies accordingly
  • Collaborate with other departments, including clinical teams, to assess and manage infection risks associated with procedures, equipment, and patient flow
  • Liaise with contractors and subcontractors to ensure adherence to IPAC standards and protocols, including environmental cleaning, PPE usage, and sterilization procedures, providing guidance, training, and oversight to maintain compliance across all contracted services
  • Participate in quality and safety committees, accreditation readiness, and health and safety initiatives
  • Provide support and training to team members
  • Perform additional duties and undertake special projects as assigned

People Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and manage the contractual agreements related to the Medical Device Reprocessing Department (MDRD) and Environmental Services (EVS)/Housekeeping

Corporate Responsibilities:

  • Participate in all mandatory training requirements and work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, company Policies and Procedures, as well as established industry guidelines
  • Be responsible for and ensure that all staff supervised are trained and work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, company Policies and Procedures, as well as established industry guidelines

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Public Health, Microbiology, or a related Health Science field is required
  • Certification in Infection Control (CIC) from the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology required
  • Current registration in good standing with the relevant regulatory college
  • Minimum 3–5 years of progressive experience in Infection Prevention and Control, preferably in a surgical or ambulatory care setting
  • Demonstrated experience in leading Infection Control Programs and Audits
  • Familiarity with Ontario's healthcare regulations, IPAC Core Competencies, and accreditation standards
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicates complex ideas clearly and concisely to diverse audiences, including senior leadership and external stakeholders
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Focus on education and interpersonal abilities to engage staff across disciplines
  • Able to lead change management and foster a culture of safety and compliance
  • Ability to exercise significant discretion and sensitivity involving responsibility for protecting sensitive information and ensuring compliance with data security policies and oversee the development and implementation of confidentiality procedures
  • Computer proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and IPAC surveillance software (e.g., RL6, Mede Analytics, or equivalent)
  • Experience in Meditech EMR system is an asset
  • Satisfactory passing of a criminal record check/vulnerable sector check
  • Provide proof of Immunization and TB records
