Position Summary
The Stewardship Program Manager is responsible for implementing and overseeing stewardship programs that support the protection and sustainable management of the Nations hauuii (traditional territory). This role focuses on environmental monitoring, compliance support, and capacity building, ensuring all activities reflect the Nations values, laws, and long-term vision for environmental and cultural sustainability.
The Stewardship Program Manager supervises two Lands and Resources Officers and two Marine Stewardship Technicians and works collaboratively with the Fisheries Manager and Lands Manager. Reporting to the Director of nismaakukqinaaa (always our land), the Stewardship Program Manager ensures that stewardship efforts are grounded in traditional knowledge and responsive to environmental conditions, while aligning with the Nations governance responsibilities and community priorities.
Primary/Core Responsibilities
Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Yuuuiath Government policies, standards, practices and procedures, as directed by the Director of nismaakukqinaaa (Always our land).
Stewardship Program Development and Leadership
- Lead and coordinate field-based stewardship activities such as patrols, data collection, environmental observations, and reporting.
- Support the development and implementation of stewardship protocols and enforcement strategies.
- Provide recommendations on land and resource use based on ecological data and stewardship priorities.
- Integrate Indigenous knowledge with scientific approaches in monitoring and compliance activities.
- Collaborate with the Fisheries and Lands teams to ensure alignment across resource areas.
Environmental Monitoring & Data Management
- Develop and implement procedures to collect and manage ecological and environmental data.
- Track the state of the hahuuii using consistent monitoring frameworks.
- Support data informed decision-making by providing regular reports and updates
Community Engagement and Capacity Building
- Develop and deliver community outreach and education initiatives focused on environmental stewardship and sustainable practices..
- Facilitate opportunities for youth and citizen involvement in stewardship, monitoring, and data collection activities.
- Work with Elders and knowledge keepers to ensure cultural protocols and knowledge guided stewardship work.
Sustainable Resource Stewardship
- Contribute to resource management planning that ensures land and resource decisions support both ecological health and community wellbeing.
- Support job creation and skill development through stewardship related programs and partnerships.
- Monitor impacts of permitted activities and support adaptive strategies to mitigate negative effects.
Financial Administration and Reporting
- Manage budgets, funding proposals, and reporting requirements for stewardship initiatives.
- Develop work plans and track progress for stewardship projects.
Performs other duties and responsibilities as and as assigned by the Director of nismaakukqinaaa (Always our land).
Qualifications
Training, Education and Experience
- A degree in Environmental Science, Resource Management, Indigenous Environmental Studies, Conservation Biology, or a related field is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience in environmental stewardship, Indigenous governance, or land/resource management will be considered.
- A minimum of 5 years of related experience, including experience in program implementation, field coordination, or cross-sector collaboration. Experience managing budgets, funding proposals, work plans and reporting processes.
- Exceptional communication, facilitation, and stakeholder engagement skills, with experience working alongside Elders, Knowledge Holders, government, industry, and community members.
- Proficiency in data management systems, GIS mapping tools, and environmental monitoring technologies is considered an asset.
- Valid Class 5 BC Drivers License and reliable access to transportation.
- Must successfully complete a criminal records check.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of environmental science, land-based policies, and Indigenous rights.
- Experience in managing teams and coordinating field work.
- Proficiency in GIS, data analysis, and reporting.
- Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent client service skills. Friendly, positive, responsive, professional and helpful.
- Ability to exercise a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
- Able to work independently with minimal day-to-day supervision as well as working within a collaborative team framework.
- Advanced computer skills, including MS Office.
