The Opportunity

Shorefast is seeking a full-time Summer student to support the launch of new programming for the Shorefast Institute for Place-Based Economies. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work alongside creative social enterprise professionals building economic and cultural resilience in communities. We are looking for a creative, adept individual to map both quantitative and qualitative data in a new form of community economic mapping.

This is a full-time position requiring 40 hours per week from May to August 2025 with flexible start and end dates. This is a remote student position with opportunities to work on-site if the student selects to complete their employment on Fogo Island or is located in Toronto.

What You'll Do

Reporting to the Financial Innovation Lead, duties will vary depending on project needs, but will include:

· Map Development: Collaborate with the Shorefast Institute team and partner organizations to design and implement a map integrating multiple quantitative and qualitative data sets for Fogo Island. This tool will help communities visualize and leverage local assets as part of a broader suite of economic literacy resources being developed by the Institute.

· Contribute to the Development of Data Toolsets: Support the creation of additional data collection and visualization tools. You'll participate in meetings with leading experts in data visualization, contribute ideas, and assist with project coordination and documentation.

· Conduct Research in Economic Mapping and Visualization: Work alongside the Financial Innovation Lead to gather insights and conduct research that informs the design of tools aimed at increasing economic literacy through clear, place-based data visualization.

Qualifications and Experience

· Currently enrolled in a Master's program (or equivalent) in geography, geology, oceanographic studies, economics, urban planning, or related field at a Canadian university

· Experience with GIS mapping tools (experience with Esri software is required)

· Strong background in data analysis and research methodologies

· Able to work independently and meet deadlines

· Demonstrated interest in community economic development and making economic systems more visible and accessible to communities
