Job Description

Internal Job Title: Software Designer
Job Type: Permanent, Full-Time
Job Location: Ottawa, ON
Work Model: Hybrid

Position Summary

We are looking for a Software Designer to create detailed software design specifications and architectural blueprints for our suite of solutions for the Bahamas. You will work closely with software developers, product managers, and stakeholders to ensure that software solutions meet functional and technical requirements. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical skills, a deep understanding of system design principles, and experience with software modeling tools.

Responsibilities

Software Design & Architecture

  • Design system architecture and detailed component interactions.
  • Develop wireframes, UML diagrams, and technical documentation to guide developers.
  • Ensure software designs align with business requirements and scalability needs.
  • Identify potential performance bottlenecks and security risks in software design.

Collaboration & Stakeholder Communication

  • Work closely with developers to translate design concepts into working software.
  • Collaborate with UX/UI designers to align software functionality with user experience.
  • Communicate software designs to non-technical stakeholders and gather feedback.
  • Participate in architectural reviews and design discussions.

Process Improvement & Best Practices

  • Advocate for software development best practices, including modularity, reusability, and scalability.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and company guidelines.
  • Stay updated on emerging trends in software design and architecture.
Qualifications

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • Certifications in software architecture or design (e.g., TOGAF, UML Certification) are beneficial.

Experience

  • 3+ years of experience in software design
  • 10+ years of software development experience
  • Experience with cloud-based architectures and API design.

Technical Concepts & Methodologies

  • Software design principles (SOLID, DRY, KISS).
  • UML modeling and system design diagrams.
  • Microservices architecture and distributed systems.
  • Design patterns and best practices.

Technical Environment

  • Modeling Tools: UML, Visio, Lucidchart.
  • Programming Languages: Java, Python, JavaScript, C#, TypeScript.
  • Architectural Patterns: MVC, MVVM, Microservices.
  • Databases: PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Oracle.
  • Cloud Services: AWS, Azure, Google Cloud.

Soft Skills & Competencies

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts effectively.
  • Collaboration and teamwork skills.
  • Attention to detail and focus on quality.

Mandatory Requirements

  • Languages: Fluency in English (reading, writing, speaking)
  • Travel: Ability to travel internationally approx. 1-2 weeks/year
