We have an opportunity for a Ship Planner within our Deltaport Ship Planning Department. This is a unionized position represented by ILWU Local 502.

Duties

Reporting to the Manager, Terminals Planning, you will be responsible for the allocation of containers arriving on the terminal via truck, rail or vessel, in cooperation with other departments using a Terminal Operating System and other tools as required. The goal of this position is to allocate resources so that productivity and customer service are maximized.

Duties include but are not limited to:

• Creating allocations for empty containers arriving via rail, truck and vessel.

• Allocating Export & Import loads from the rail, gate and vessel.

• Planning traffic to and from the rail, yard, vessel and gate to avoid congestion and facilitate efficient operations.

• Making consolidations to maximize space in the terminal.

• Assigning empty containers for vessel loading in accordance to request and requirements of the SSL.

• Inter-departmental communication.

• Complete additional duties as required.

Qualifications

You bring the following knowledge and experience:

• High school graduation required and a diploma in Logistics, Transportation or Shipping is preferred.

• Two (2) years of relevant and related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Demonstrated ability to follow established procedures with attention to detail.

• Demonstrated ability to work independently.

• Demonstrated sound analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills.

• Demonstrated organizational skills including the ability to multi-task prioritize and work under pressure in order to meet tight deadlines.

• Demonstrated sound verbal communication skills including telephone call-handling skills and the ability to respond to difficult or demanding situations with tact and diplomacy.

• Demonstrated courteous, professional manner in dealing with internal and external contacts and customers, including positive interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

• Ability to keyboard at an intermediate level.

• Ability to work effectively with software applications required to support operations activities, including the MS Office suite of applications.

• Knowledge of yard and marine terminal / operations environment an asset.

In addition, you must be able to work assigned shifts and days of the week required to support a 24/7 operation. Overtime may be required. Also, a valid Transportation Security Clearance (“TSC”) is required for this role.
