THE JOB

We are actively seeking a Risk Underwriting Manager within our Canadian Risk Underwriting Team. The Risk Underwriting Manager will be responsible for the proactive and dynamic management of Canada's portfolio of trade credit insurance exposure and overview of a team or risk underwriters who will be making credit assessments on Canadian companies. The Risk Underwriting Manager will recognize two direct reports and will be expected to implement and lead monthly portfolio monitoring initiatives, participate in direct client communications, drive credit limit decision optimization, and support team professional development, while maintaining and building upon core underwriting quality standards. The manager will also be involved with broader North American risk underwriting initiatives.


CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Promote and implement quality and productivity standards which align with the Group Risk Underwriting Department.
  • Participate in regular client and broker communications surrounding exposure management, portfolio analysis, and credit limit decisions.
  • Network with local and international colleagues to ensure process improvement, decision optimization and consistency in the customer experience.
  • Actively monitor and identify key buyer risks and policy profitability trends with direct responsibility over the sensitive risk portfolio.
  • Complete and/or validate Maximum Standard Exposure (MSE) reports to propose a maximum ceiling to be set on a given buyer or group.
  • Proactively engage direct team in ongoing training opportunities, regular coaching/mentoring sessions, as-needed feedback surrounding complex credit limit decisions, opportunities for team building, and periodic performance reviews.
  • Manage daily case workflow and ensure sufficient team coverage on a week-to-week basis.
  • Establish and implement trade-sector specific risk underwriting strategies and ensure a consistent process for actively monitoring trade sector developments.
  • Collaborate with Collections and Claims to ensure a comprehensive post-mortem analysis and knowledge sharing campaign.
  • Collaborate with Commercial team to help drive go to market strategy and knowledge sharing on market conditions or risk appetite
  • Design, implement, and participate in various ad-hoc reporting and portfolio monitoring initiatives as necessary based on feedback from Compliance, Audit, and Group Risk Underwriting.

THE CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate will recognize a strong soft skill set paired with a deep understanding of financial statement analysis concepts. This role also requires effective time management, an operational mindset, and a strong attention to detail. Candidates should feel comfortable engaging with internal and external stakeholders.

The ideal candidate will recognize:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, or similar discipline. An M.B.A. or CFA is beneficial.
  • 3 – 5+ years of experience in the credit insurance or financial services industries with a proven record of increasing underwriting authority/delegation.
  • Previous experience managing or leading high-performance teams.
  • Excellent communication skills and proven ability to navigate key IT resources.
  • Working knowledge of credit insurance products and trends, corporate finance, business
