Job Description

Senior Data Engineer – Hybrid (Toronto-Based)

Position Overview:

As a Senior Data Engineer, you will design and implement frameworks for data collection, extraction, and transformation of both structured and unstructured data. You will develop data infrastructure such as data warehouses and data lakes, creating efficient data access points. Utilizing tools like Kafka, Talend, MS SQL, Azure Data Factory, and more, you'll build and maintain robust data pipelines.

You will play a key role in organizing data to support business intelligence, analytics, and application systems. This includes integrating data across the enterprise landscape to ensure consistent and timely delivery of information. You'll be accountable for efficient architectural design and scalable system integration.

  • Reports to: Manager, Data Engineering II

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and implementation of complex data architecture and integration solutions across the full development lifecycle.
  • Develop and evolve data service layers to deliver high-quality data offerings.
  • Work with stakeholders to identify needs and design data-driven solutions, including prototyping and collaborative design sessions.
  • Build scalable, modern data pipelines with robust error handling, monitoring, and alerting capabilities.
  • Optimize database performance in collaboration with DBAs and perform ongoing monitoring.
  • Analyze database entities and design efficient solutions based on system requirements.
  • Ensure adherence to coding standards, documentation, testing protocols, and deployment procedures.
  • Partner with data governance teams to build clear, reusable data lineage and architecture.
  • Continuously evaluate new technologies and tools to enhance data operations and simplify architecture.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent experience (Master's degree is an asset)
  • 7+ years of experience in data engineering with structured work processes
  • 4+ years of experience in data solution architecture
  • 4+ years of experience with data integration tools (e.g., Talend, Informatica, SSIS, DataStage)
  • Demonstrated expertise in Snowflake, Talend, Kafka, ActiveBatch, Data Vault 2.0, WhereScape, Python, SQL, and Azure DataBricks
  • Cloud experience with Azure (additional experience with AWS is a plus)
  • Strong background in data modeling, integration, orchestration, and governance
  • Capable of leading large-scale projects and effectively communicating with both technical and non-technical audiences

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Knowledge of business intelligence, analytics, and reporting tools
  • Experience building dashboards and data visualizations (e.g., Power BI, Collibra)
  • Familiarity with DevOps practices and tools such as Git, Maven, Jenkins, GitLab
  • Experience with automated testing and continuous integration/delivery workflows
