About Lite-1

We are a young creative group of multidisciplinary scientist and designers with the mission to build the next generation of sustainable dye and pigments grown by microorganisms as the dye factories of the future. Our innovation is a patented platform biotech that biofabricates customizable microbial dye to the need of end industry user. Our dyes reduce water pollution, are safe for workers as well as the ecosystem, and eliminate our dependence on non-renewable resources. The product offers an overhaul to the dye industry to shift from one of the preeminent polluters to a regenerative and more humane industry. Our main goal is to transform the dye industry from a toxic and hazardous industry to a clean, healthy, and circular one by introducing the future of dye manufacturing.

JOB Title: Science Director

Position Summary

The Director of Science will be responsible for overseeing all R&D functions, spanning genetic engineering, upstream processing, downstream processing, formulation, and application sciences. This leadership role demands a forward-thinking, multidisciplinary scientist who can not only manage cross-functional teams but also strategically align their output with the company's vision, milestones, and market needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Scientific Oversight: lead and harmonize all scientific departments, including synthetic biology, fermentation (USP & DSP), formulation, and material application — ensuring they are aligned under a cohesive R&D vision.
  • Cross-functional Alignment: design and direct integrated strategies that bridge deep science with product and process goals, aligning technical progress with short-term deliverables and long-term vision.
  • Team Leadership & Culture: build, mentor, and manage a high-performing, multidisciplinary team of scientists, ensuring a culture of collaboration, accountability, innovation, and continuous learning.
  • Troubleshooting & Problem Solving: serve as the scientific anchor for critical troubleshooting across departments, bringing technical depth and creative thinking to remove blockers and enable fast iteration.
  • Roadmapping & Execution: oversee the development of technical roadmaps, ensuring realistic planning of resources, timelines, and budgets while holding teams accountable to milestones.
  • Executive Collaboration: work closely with the CEO and Chief Innovation Officer to define and refine our long-term technology strategy and translate it into actionable R&D execution plans.
  • IP, Regulatory & Grants: provide scientific leadership in shaping IP strategy, evaluating regulatory pathways, contributing to partner and customer evaluations, and supporting grant proposal development.
  • Data-Driven Decision Making: bring analytical rigor and scientific judgment to guide high-stakes decisions, assess technical risks, and support investment in the right opportunities.
  • Innovation Culture: foster an environment where curiosity, experimentation, and creativity thrive — while maintaining a strong foundation in reproducibility and quality science.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Synthetic Biology, Bioprocessing, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 8+ years of experience in industrial R&D, including team leadership and strategic oversight of multidisciplinary programs
  • Proven track record in scaling biotech innovations from bench to pilot or commercial scale
  • Deep technical expertise in at least two of our core areas (e.g., strain engineering, fermentation optimization, or formulation), with strong fluency across others
  • Experience contributing to IP portfolios, regulatory strategy, and/or fundraising efforts (e.g., grants, due diligence)
  • Strong communicator who can translate complex science into actionable insights for business and technical audiences alike
  • High comfort level operating in fast-paced, high-growth startup environments
  • Passion for sustainability, innovation, and leaving a meaningful impact through science
