Job Description

Estimator-Civil/Wet/Utilities

Full-time, Perm, Hybrid - in office 80/20 to start for first month or so, after flexibility will be introduced

Location: Markham, ON

Salary: 110-150K (based on level of experience)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop detailed cost estimates for civil and wet utility projects, including materials, labor, equipment, and subcontractor components.
  • Conduct quantity take-offs for site grading, trenching, excavation, bedding, backfill, pipe installation, manholes, valves, and related infrastructure.
  • Interpret construction drawings, specifications, geotechnical reports, and municipal/agency requirements.
  • Source and analyze vendor and subcontractor quotes, ensuring scope alignment and competitiveness.
  • Work closely with project managers, engineers, and field personnel to review constructability and develop cost-effective solutions.
  • Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits, and risk reviews.
  • Prepare and present bid proposals, scope breakdowns, and cost summaries for internal approval and submission.
  • Maintain a comprehensive database of historical costs, production rates, supplier pricing, and subcontractor performance.
  • Monitor market trends, local labor conditions, and material pricing that may impact estimates.
  • Support project teams during preconstruction and post-award with cost validation and change order pricing.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience estimating civil infrastructure and wet utility projects
  • Strong knowledge of underground utility construction practices (water, storm, and sanitary systems).
  • Familiar with applicable local, provincial/state, and federal regulations and standards for utility construction.
  • Proficient with estimating software such as HCSS HeavyBid, B2W Estimate, or similar tools.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Bluebeam, and PDF take-off tools.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines simultaneously.

Preferred Assets:

  • Experience with public sector bids (municipal, regional, MTO).
  • Familiarity with GPS-based take-off tools or 3D earthwork modeling.
  • Understanding of trenchless methods (HDD, microtunneling) is an asset.
  • Certifications such as Certified Professional Estimator (CPE), Gold Seal Certification, or PMP an asset
