THE OPPORTUNITY

Edmonton Screen has an exciting opportunity for a forward-thinking and strategically minded Director of Finance to join a dynamic organization at the forefront of supporting Edmonton's creative economy. Reporting to the CEO, the Director of Finance will oversee the overall financial management of Edmonton Screen and ensure the effective functioning of the finance department and internal systems.

As Director of Finance, you will be responsible for organizational financial management, risk management and compliance of programming, policies and procedures. In collaboration with the CEO, you will help assess human resources requirements and provide assistance to the Board of Directors. RESPONSIBILITIES

Finance

  • Manage all financial audits and ensure timely completion and compliance with standards.
  • Prepare financial reports and analysis to support decision-making and organizational transparency.
  • Manage cash flows and perform all accounting functions, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, and bank transfers.
  • Develop, revise, and maintain strong internal controls; provide guidance and training to staff on financial procedures.
  • Oversee loans and investments, ensuring responsible financial stewardship.
  • Oversee and review the work of the external bookkeeping firm to ensure accurate reconciliations, data integrity, and compliance with internal processes.
  • Provide regular budget updates (monthly or quarterly) to program leads, supporting financial literacy and accountability.
  • Support the CEO with financial information for grant applications, reports, and compliance requirements.
  • Forecast staffing costs and personnel scenarios to align with organizational needs and funding constraints.

Human Resources

  • Collaborate with the CEO to develop and revise job descriptions and the overall staffing model.
  • Train and orient staff on organizational policies, procedures, and expectations.
  • Oversee payroll processing and manage financial aspects of onboarding and offboarding, including vacation tracking, out-of-office schedules, banked time and CRA compliance.
  • Advise on employee versus contractor classifications and ensure compliance with CRA and employment standards.

Operations

  • Monitor the status of organizational priorities. Identify potential financial risks and develop options for resolutions.
  • In collaboration with the CEO, lead the risk management program; identify potential risks, assess the likelihood and impact of the risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Provide assistance to the Board of Directors and Board Committees as required
  • Act as the Privacy Officer for the organization
  • Liaise with City of Edmonton employees, legal counsel, insurance provider and other vendors.
  • Assist in the development of the Edmonton Screen business plan and budget.
  • Oversee implementation and maintenance of financial systems, serving as primary liaison with financial service providers.
  • Maintain and update the organizational risk register in collaboration with the CEO and board committees.

Compliance

  • Ensure compliance to all relevant legislation (e.g. Alberta Employment Standards) and Edmonton Screen policies.
  • Prepare and file all required returns (e.g. T4s, GST, WCB).
  • Review agreements and contracts to ensure compliance with organizational and legal standard.
  • Ensure requirements in funder agreements are met.
  • Prepare and file required funder reports.
  • Maintain an internal compliance calendar (e.g., CRA deadlines, WCB renewals, funder reporting) to prevent missed submissions.
  • Conduct regular internal reviews of finance practices to identify risks or inefficiencies.

Programming

  • Assist in the management of the Edmonton Screen grant and rebate programs.
  • Collaboratively develop and revise programs.
  • Liaise with funders and stakeholders in financial areas.
  • Provide clarification on eligible expenses or reimbursement rules tied to grant terms.

Other Duties As Assigned

  • Perform additional tasks as required to support the organization's goals and objectives across all areas of responsibility, including contributing financial insights to strategic planning retreats and initiatives.
  • Maintain a handover document or continuity binder for internal use and knowledge transfer.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 8 years of experience in financial and operations management.
  • CPA or similar designation is an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement financial and operational policies, procedures, and reporting protocols.
  • Proficient with financial accounting software and systems.
  • Experience in not-for-profit organizations is an asset.
  • Proven ability to oversee external bookkeeping or financial service providers to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Strong experience preparing financial content for grant applications and funder reports.
  • Knowledge of CRA regulations, including employee vs. contractor classifications and payroll compliance.
  • Skilled in forecasting staffing costs and aligning financial plans with restricted and unrestricted funding sources.
  • Familiarity with implementing and managing financial systems and tools.
