Coldbox Builders Inc. specializes in the Plan Design Build of environmentally controlled production and logistics facilities for the global food and pharmaceutical industries. Our design and construction teams work to create practical building solutions that meet or exceed client expectations for operational efficiency and provide maximum client profitability.

Key Purpose

The Architectural & CAD Designer role is involved in design and development of projects from concept stage through to construction drawings and documents, including detailing and specifications, and will support ongoing construction with RFI responses and shop drawing reviews. This role will also include coordination and liaison with various municipal and jurisdictional authorities to support approval and building permit processes.

This is a full time in-office position in Burlington, Ontario.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

• Assist in studying the design context related to existing conditions, local building codes and land use by-laws, and stated Owner requirements.
• Generate design drawings from concept through to completion.
• Coordinate with outsourced sub-consultants and engineering design for civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, refrigeration and fire protection.
• Generate 3D models of buildings and produce presentation drawings and renderings.
• Assist with the continuous updating and improvement of a standard building details catalog and product specifications for use by design, estimating and project management departments.
• Perform periodic project site visits to review construction progress and conformance to issued design drawings and specifications.
• Carry out shop drawing reviews.

Key Knowledge and Skills

• Be proficient in CAD, BIM/Revit, SketchUp, and Bluebeam.
• Strong technical understanding of drafting principles and construction theory.
• Ability to work within established policies and procedures at a steady, even pace to promote accuracy and quality of work.
• Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment to achieve deadlines, and agile to work on multiple projects.

• Be detail oriented, accurate in work output, self-motivated, and able to work independently.
• Possess a positive attitude and commitment to professional growth.
• Act in a supportive, collaborative approach with management and peers.

Education and Experience Requirements

• Hold a minimum of an undergraduate Degree in Architecture, an Architectural Technologist Diploma, OR and Architectural Technician Certificate.
• Have 3 5 years of relevant experience in design principles and processes within the Industrial Commercial Institutional (greenfield) construction industry.
• Design experience in controlled environment building construction is an asset.
• Planning experience with building permit submissions and municipal approvals processes is an asset.
