Established in 1993, Y Newcomer Connections is a leading immigrant settlement centre focused on creating connections that will transform our community into a lasting, healthy home for immigrants from around the world, and from all walks of life.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Substitute Language Instructor is a casual, hourly position that provides English language training to adult ESL learners on an as needed basis.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

Instruct newcomer adult learners in LINC themes and topics, face-to-face and online, using lessons provided by the class teacher when supplying for 5 classes or less.

Create and teach lessons based on the months theme when supplying over 5 consecutive days in the same class.

Be familiar with the Canadian Language Benchmarks in order to meet objectives and outcomes for classes.

Be familiar with Portfolio-Based Language Assessment (PBLA) used to chart learners progress.

Work with LINC instructors to participate in group learning activity projects according to learners interests, abilities, and needs.

Deliver computer-based learning activities through our online learning platform, Avenue. Training will be provided.

Submit daily attendance records to the Supervisor or Team Lead.

Inform the Supervisor or Team Lead of issues promptly.

Help maintain a clean classroom.

Carry out additional duties as required.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

A Bachelor's Degree, Community College diploma or similar from an accredited institution

Heightened sensitivity to the needs of newcomer adult learners

A minimum of 2 years work experience in a cross-cultural environment

Must be fluent in the English language, knowledge of other languages is an asset

Exceptional oral and written English skills

Experience with Microsoft 365, learning management systems (Avenue, D2L, Moodle), and remote teaching.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • As a YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick staff person, your hours of work and location may be adjusted due to programming needs. There is no guarantee of number of hours worked within a work week.
  • The YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick has a Joint Health and Safety Committee which meets on a monthly basis to discuss health and safety within the workplace. Questions or concerns about your workplace must be brought forward to committee members.
  • In this role, you will be required to work in an environment which is often busy with high levels of noise.
  • As a YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick staff person, you are responsible for your own travel to and from work.
  • You are responsible for the member/clients safety on a daily basis. You will be required to perform first aid and CPR when and if necessary and you are certified to do so.
