Job Description

Aplin is partnered with a tenured manufacturing company in Edmonton to find a Quality Control & Continuous Improvement Manager. Reporting to the VP of Innovation and Technology you will be responsible for ensuring that products and processes meet regulatory, licensor, customer, and internal requirements while leading sustainable improvements across the organization. This role integrates traditional quality assurance practices with Lean methodologies to boost efficiency, minimize waste, and optimize product quality. The role also provides leadership, direction, and expertise in both quality assurance and quality control.
Key Responsibilities: Quality:

  • Lead the Quality department and oversee all personnel and activities within the Quality Control department. Collaborate with the Quality Assurance (QA) Manager on oversight of the QA department.
  • Develop and implement a strategic direction for the Quality department aligned with corporate vision and goals.
  • Identify training needs for QA Supervisors and Inspectors.
  • Work with Plant Supervisors to ensure necessary changes to manufacturing processes are understood and implemented.
  • Collaborate with the QA Manager to maintain and enhance floor-level quality management system requirements.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining standard operating procedures for QA Inspectors, Machinists, and CNC Operators.
  • Partner with the Licensor Quality Manager to align QA procedures with licensor requirements.
  • Review manufacturing processes and recommend improvements.
  • Prepare Manufacturing Test Plans as required.
  • Maintain control of the API Monogram.
Continuous Improvement:
  • Lead and support initiatives using Lean tools such as Root Cause Analysis, 5S, Kaizen, FMEA, and Value Stream Mapping.
  • Work with the Senior Management Team (SMT) to standardize processes, improve workflows, and reduce variability while maintaining quality, safety, and financial goals.
  • Promote and enhance employee understanding of Lean methodologies.
  • Provide coaching and training support in Lean principles.
Management:
  • Establish and manage departmental budgets in line with organizational objectives.
  • Collaborate with HR and senior leadership to attract, retain, and develop quality team members.
  • Determine licensor training requirements for employees in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
  • Promote a collaborative and inclusive culture within the department.
  • Lead and support direct reports through training, performance management, and goal setting.
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations, focusing on areas such as operations, continuous improvement, quality, and safety.
  • Foster a culture of safety and risk management within the department.
Senior Management Team Involvement:
  • Actively contribute to business process reviews and strategic initiatives as a member of the SMT.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership on both short-term and long-term strategic initiatives.
  • Monitor department and organizational performance and address key issues affecting quality and delivery KPIs.
  • Participate in monthly leadership meetings to review and act on performance metrics such as revenue, margins, and non-conformance rates.
  • Ensure accountability and follow-through on strategic goals and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Take ownership of issues impacting customer needs and regulatory compliance by identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.
Qualifications & Experience:
  • 15+ years of QA/QC experience in a machine shop or manufacturing environment.
  • 10+ years in a supervisory or managerial role with direct personnel oversight.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Quality Management, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Certification in Lean/Six Sigma Manufacturing.
  • ISO Auditor certification is an asset.
  • General knowledge of products and services related to the oil and gas industry is preferred.
