Position Title: Manager, Finance and Accounting

Employment Status: Permanent, full-time

Hours of Work/Schedule: Monday to Friday, 35 hours a week

Salary range: $87,500 to $100,000 (commensurate on skills and experience, plus participation in Group Benefits & HOOPP.)

Position Reports to: Chief Financial Officer

Primary Location: Pickering, ON

Job Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Manager of Finance and Accounting to join our client's team, a leading healthcare provider in the Durham region. The Manager will oversee general accounting operations, including payroll, accounts payable and receivable, banking, and adherence to financial and related policies. This position is also responsible for financial processes, procedures, and ensuring compliance. Additionally, the Manager handles the preparation and submission of funder reports, along with financial and other management reports.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Chief Financial Officer, leadership team, and managers by maintaining and delivering timely reports and analytical services (such as financial, statistical, and performance metrics). This involves ensuring overall organizational financial compliance with regulatory bodies and funders to reduce or eliminate risk exposure.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements along with detailed variance analysis.
  • Oversee accounting functions, including reconciliations, month-end schedules, and expense analysis.
  • Responsible for submitting funder reports and management reports, both financial and otherwise.
  • Prepare all year-end schedules for the annual audit.
  • Assist with tax audits and the preparation of the charity tax return.
  • Manage short-term funding and grants, as well as assist in the grant-writing process.
  • Support the month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Work with the Chief Financial Officer to prepare annual budgets.
  • Analyze budget variances and take corrective actions as needed.
  • Monitor and ensure accurate financial coding.
  • Assist in preparing funding requests and related reports.
  • Responsible for auditing the payroll register.
  • Review processes and suggest improvements to increase efficiency and optimize spending, while also contributing to the development and implementation of relevant policies and procedures.
  • Evaluate and recommend changes to accounting systems and procedures.
  • Document and develop business processes and accounting policies where necessary to enhance internal controls.
  • Oversee the creation of departmental goals, annual work plans, and reports in alignment with the organization's annual objectives.
  • Ensure compliance of self and team with legislative requirements and employment standards (such as CPA rules, GAAP principles, Ontario Employment Standards, AODA, and the Human Rights Code).
  • Identify trends and recommend system improvements.

Qualifications

  • University Degree in Finance, Business or Accounting.
  • Relevant certification (e.g. CMA or CPA) will be preferred; in-progress is also acceptable.
  • Proven experience (minimum 5 years) as a financial controller, accounting supervisor, chief or senior accountant.
  • Experience in the non-profit sector and familiarity with Ministry of Health reporting a strong asset.
  • Knowledge of and experience working with Great Plains accounting software (Microsoft Dynamics GP) highly desirable.
  • In-depth understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Experience with general ledger functions and the month-end/year-end close process.
  • Sound business management acumen with proven excellent people management (coaching/mentoring) skills, interpersonal and communication skills.
