A key aspect of this role is acting as the Contractor Administrator, ensuring that all third-party service providers meet safety and compliance standards and are properly on board. The Superintendent will also lead the implementation of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) principles and support process improvement initiatives to reduce downtime and enhance equipment performance.
Facility & Maintenance Operations
- Lead and support the implementation of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) strategies to improve equipment reliability, reduce downtime, and increase asset life.
- Oversee all facility systems at the paper mill and warehouse sites, including mechanical, electrical, HVAC, utility infrastructure, and the fire network system, ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient operations.
- Manage and continuously improve preventive and predictive maintenance programs, using data to identify trends and prevent failures.
- Identify and implement process improvement initiatives that enhance maintenance efficiency, reduce costs, and increase equipment availability.
- Ensure full compliance with safety regulations, environmental standards, and company procedures across all locations.
Contractor Oversight & Compliance
- Serve as the Contractor Administrator across all facilities, ensuring third-party contractors are compliant with site-specific safety policies and procedures.
- Ensure all contractors are properly onboarded, qualified, and aware of safety requirements prior to beginning work.
- Conduct regular audits and inspections to verify contractor safety, quality, and reliability performance.
Reliability & Continuous Improvement
- Work with Operations, Engineering, and Reliability teams to resolve chronic equipment issues and prevent recurring failures.
- Support Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Break Down Analysis (BDA) efforts to improve long-term performance.
- Develop and implement strategies that promote a culture of reliability and ownership across maintenance and operations teams.
Team Leadership
- Foster a TPM mindset among trades and operations, encouraging hands-on care, inspections, and minor maintenance.
- Supervise maintenance personnel at the mill and warehouse sites, ensuring safe work practices and job accountability.
- Provide coaching, mentoring, and performance feedback to drive individual and team success.
- Collaborating with department leads to ensure facility maintenance aligns with production and reliability goals.
Capital Projects & Planning
- Support the planning and execution of capital projects across all three sites, including upgrades, repairs, and expansions.
- Coordinate vendors, contractors, and internal resources to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget.
- Assist in developing the scope of work documents and participate in contractor selection and bidding processes.
Budgeting & Reporting
- Manage facility-related budgets for labor, materials, and contractor services across all locations.
- Track key performance indicators (KPIs) and report on equipment reliability, maintenance costs, and downtime trends.
- Identify opportunities for cost savings, risk reduction, and performance improvement.
Compliance & Documentation
- Ensure ongoing compliance with local, provincial, and federal regulations related to building codes, workplace safety, and environmental protection.
- Maintain all required documentation, including maintenance records, SOPs, contractor logs, and inspection reports.
- Prepare for and support internal and external audits related to facility operations and contractor safety.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Facilities Management, Mechanical Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Minimum of 5 years' experience in facility or maintenance management, preferably in a heavy industrial or paper mill environment.
- Solid understanding of maintenance best practices, contractor management, safety regulations, and reliability-centered maintenance.
- Demonstrated experience in team leadership, cross-functional coordination, and vendor management.
- Proficient in CMMS systems, Microsoft Office, and maintenance planning tools.
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certifications in contractor safety management, facility operations, or maintenance (e.g., CRSP, FMP, CMRP).
- Practical experience implementing TPM, Lean, or continuous improvement methodologies.
