Reports To: Senior Program Manager

Salary: Commensurate with level of experience; total compensation includes a competitive benefits plan, plus a defined benefit pension plan (HOOPP)

Hours: 35hours/week

Position Summary

The Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR) is seeking a Biostatistician to work within the Ontario Health Study (OHS) team.

The OHS has recruited over 225,000 participants across Ontario, and data holdings include multiple questionnaires, physical measures, analyses of blood samples, environmental exposures, and genetic data. The Biostatistician will be responsible for creating research-ready datasets to support genetic and epidemiological research projects, data cleaning, defining data transformations and mapping rules, data verification and documentation, conducting quantitative analyses to develop reports for internal and external stakeholders and providing support and consultation to other Study staff. The position involves working within a supportive, collaborative team as part of the provinces largest health research study. It does not typically include leading analyses that lead to publications.

Position Responsibilities

  • Define, transform, structure and verify data so it is ready for analysis (i.e., data cleaning)
  • Create and maintain documentation for data, including data dictionaries
  • Prepare performance metrics reports
  • Complete data integrity checks (e.g., descriptive statistics) to ensure consistency with previously reported data, and reconcile any differences
  • Work closely with others to explore and report on data quality issues or risks with the data, and identify opportunities for enhancements
  • Extract data from large databases and prepare the data for analyses by internal and external researchers. This includes data validation, de-identification, and preparing written documentation describing data specifications
  • Complete quantitative analyses and provide synthesized research results for operational and research reports, publications, scientific manuscripts, grant and ethics applications, as required
  • Contribute to the development of reports for various stakeholders, including ad-hoc reporting for executives and funders
  • Participate in internal and external working groups and committees, as needed, requiring knowledge in analytics and data management
  • Perform other duties as consistent with job classification, as assigned

Qualifications

  • A bachelors degree in Mathematics, Statistics, or recognized equivalent
  • Extensive practical and related experience
  • Knowledge of health research and methodology, qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis techniques, and database development
  • Strong statistical skills, including computational analysis using R and/or Python
  • Ability to write clear, concise documentation
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with colleagues
  • Some familiarity working with longitudinal data with a large number of participants
  • Some familiarity with MySQL
