Your Contribution to NRSI
NRSI is looking for a qualified individual with expertise in aquatic ecology to contribute to our aquatic group. The successful applicant will be based out of our Waterloo, Ontario office and will report to one of our aquatic project leads. The primary duties and responsibilities for this role include:
  • Background information and reviews;
  • Client and agency liaison;
  • Lead role in the completion of aquatic habitat assessments and fisheries assessments, including fish community, freshwater mussel community, benthic invertebrate and water quality sampling;
  • Data interpretation, analysis, and summarization;
  • Impact assessment and evaluation of ecological significance and sensitivity;
  • Acquisition of permits and approvals;
  • Report writing;
  • Lead or supporting role in proposal development, including workplan and budget development; and
  • Other tasks as needed dependent on skills, interests, and project requirements.
Your Education:
  • A degree in Biology or Environmental Sciences. Similar educational experience will also be considered.
Key Job Requirements:
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience as a lead aquatic biologist (preference for experience with environmental consulting);
  • Minimum of 1 year experience identifying fish;
  • Possession of a Pleasure Craft Operator Card;
  • Willing and able to travel for multi-day field surveys, sometimes in remote locations, under inclement weather, in a variety of environmental conditions, and occasionally for long hours;
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities;
  • Demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail in all aspects of work;
  • Physical fitness, as field work for this position will be highly physical;
  • A commitment to continual improvement of technical abilities;
  • Clear and effective communication skills, both written and orally; and
  • A valid driver's license, insurance eligible, and over 18 years old in order to drive a rental vehicle.
Assets:
  • Experience with Environmental Impact Studies, Environmental Assessments, and Species at Risk Screenings;
  • Understanding of Provincial and Federal fisheries legislation, policies and guidelines;
  • Familiarity with natural heritage policies, legislation, and guidelines (e.g., Provincial Policy Statement, Significant Wildlife Habitat Technical Guide, Official Plans);
  • Experience in the identification of other wildlife and terrestrial vegetation;
  • Up to date Standard First Aid and CPR-C certification;
  • Access to a personal vehicle insured for work purposes;
  • Experience boating and trailering;
  • Previously or currently valid backpack electrofishing certification and experience leading electrofishing surveys; and
  • Ontario Stream Assessment Protocol training.

Location: Waterloo, Ontario. This position can accommodate hybrid work, with a requirement for in-office attendance as per the company policy.
Salary: $24.50-$29.60 per hour commensurate on experience.
Estimated number of hours per week, including authorized travel: 40 hours.
