Introduction & Key Role Objectives

WJ Groundwater Canada is part of the WJ Group, headquartered in the UK and with operations across Europe, the Middle East, and the Philippines. WJ Groundwater is the leading construction dewatering and groundwater specialist in Ontario, and is expanding across Canada with current projects in BC and QC and pursuing opportunities nationwide. We have specialized plant and equipment that allows us to install custom dewatering systems in various environments including from within tunnels and shafts and from the surface.

Well drilling is an essential part of our business. Globally, we operate over 15 drilling rigs ranging from 5 to 30 tonnes, and we install more than 3,500 boreholes each year. These range from 6m deep with 75mm diameter wellpoints to wells up to 600 mm in diameter and 400m deep. Key equipment, such as drilling rigs, is a shared resource across WJ operations worldwide whenever it provides value to the Group or our customers.

The principal function of this position is to act as the site leader, directing the site team and providing support for the Project Managers. This is a hands-on Foreman role which involves more than just supervision, requiring the individual to be actively involved in the work and physically capable of performing labor-intensive tasks and able to operate drilling equipment as needed.

Reports to West Coast Project Manager

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Lead on-site activities, serving as the primary client contact while overseeing the WJ operations team to ensure proper installation, commissioning, and maintenance of WJ systems
  • Coordinate site activities with clients site staff to ensure proper access is provided and all equipment is on site and stored in a safe location
  • Demonstrate strong technical knowledge of dewatering, water treatment, and drilling systems, including their installation processes
  • Supervise the activities of the WJ site crews to ensure the achievement of project objectives and alignment with both business and client needs
  • Monitor and validate man hours of operations staff (including overtime) to ensure works are performed on schedule
  • Aid in the coaching, training and development of site staff
  • Demonstrate and lead by example in operating tools, equipment, and systems, while ensuring all equipment is consistently well-maintained and professionally presented to uphold a strong customer-facing image
  • Attend progress and planning meetings with Project Managers to provide practical input, address on-site concerns, offer feedback on tentative schedules, and maintain regular communication to keep them informed of drilling progress
  • Assist with and lead site maintenance and installation activities
  • Prepare material lists for system installation and maintenance, complete SARs and daily rig inspections, and support Project Managers with well record documentation
  • Monitor the performance of dewatering, water treatment, and drilling systems, and provide recommendations to optimize efficiency and effectiveness
  • Ensure the drilling rig operates as designed with standby equipment ready for contingencies, while maintaining and operating the rig and setting minimum standards for all ancillary equipment
  • Be responsible for own health and safety and that of colleagues, in accordance with current construction guidance and relevant legislation.

Qualifications & Experience

  • A motivated and hardworking individual with good verbal communication skills is essential
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience as a Dewatering Labourer/Operative or a similar position within the construction industry
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience as a Driller on construction projects in diverse conditions and with various types of equipment
  • Possess a strong understanding of WJ systems, equipment, and technology, with the experience and confidence to demonstrate various drilling applications, including underground, horizontal drilling with lost bits, and large-diameter reverse circulation
  • Confident in operating all types of drilling rigs, from mechanically operated hydraulic piling rigs to 5t micro-drilling machines with electronic remote control
  • Ability to safely operate heavy equipment and manually lift heavy objects
  • Proven leadership in projects across various conditions and equipment
  • Strong team management skills with proven ability to plan, organize, and schedule workloads for both self and others
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, with the capability of identify maintenance issues and recommend solutions
  • Experience working with dewatering and pumping systems and/or water treatment will be considered an asset
  • A valid drivers licence and access to a vehicle are required

Working Conditions

This role is predominately site-based and involves installing dewatering systems in both outdoor and indoor environments, including tunnels, adits, and shafts, which are classified as low to medium risk confined spaces. This role is physically demanding, requiring extended periods of standing, frequent heavy lifting, and repetitive tasks. Comfort with working in all weather conditions, on heavy industrial construction sites, and within confined spaces is essential.

Standard working hours are 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday to Friday, with occasional flexibility needed. Overtime may be required on evenings and weekends, and it can often be at short notice based on client demands.
