Position Summary

Seabird Island is committed to inclusive early childhood development. We are dedicated to creating a culturally safe and inclusive environment that respects and values Indigenous knowledge, traditions, and ways of being. We are seeking a Supported Child Development Program (SCDP) Support Worker to join our team, working collaboratively to enhance the learning and participation of children with extra support needs in childcare settings.

Under the direction of the Child Development Team Lead, the SCDP Support Worker provides culturally informed, developmentally appropriate support to children with extra support needs. This role involves working directly with children, families, and childcare staff to implement individualized service plans, promote inclusive practices, and ensure children's full participation in early childhood programs. The Support Worker will also engage in community relations activities that support children, families, and childcare centers.

This is a Full-Time Term Contract with an end date of Jan 01, 2026, with the possibility of extension.

What You'll Do

Planning and Administration

  • Follow and implement Individual Service Plans (ISP) for assigned children.
  • Work collaboratively with consultants and families to update ISPs.
  • Maintain daily documentation and reports for each child on caseload.
  • Complete required logs and reports on a daily, monthly, and annual basis.

Service Delivery

  • Provide direct support to children in childcare settings.
  • Participate in planning and delivery of daily activities based on children's ISPs.
  • Promote positive child-adult interactions.
  • Support culturally appropriate learning experiences and inclusive programming.
  • Assist in transitions to other programs, including school readiness.

Reporting and Evaluation

  • Maintain regular communication with families, consultants, and childcare center staff.
  • Contribute to the development of inclusive and supportive environments.
  • Participate in review and adjustment of service plans.
  • Ensure all documentation complies with program policies and confidentiality standards.
  • Maintain confidentiality except when legally obligated to report abuse or neglect.

Team and Interdepartmental Collaboration

  • Collaborate with childcare center staff, consultants, and the wider team.
  • Uphold center policies and contribute to team efforts.
  • Attend staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities.

Other Duties

  • Additional responsibilities as needed to support the community and uphold our shared values.

Working / Special Conditions

  • Initial and ongoing employment is subject to submission of a clear Criminal Record Review Program Check to ensure the safety and trust of the communities we serve. This check will be conducted every five years.
  • Initial and ongoing commitment to the values and guidelines of Sq'wqel (Seabird Island Band), including our policies, procedures, standards of practice, and laws, is essential. This commitment supports our collective work, the community, and the responsibilities of this role.
  • Must possess a valid class 5 driver's license and have access to safe and reliable transportation, insured for community-based use, to effectively engage with and support families in our community and the communities we serve.

What You Bring

Qualifications:

  • A certificate or diploma in Early Childhood Education. We also recognize and value cultural knowledge and experience gained through other forms of education and training, including teachings from Elders and Knowledge Keepers.
  • Formal education or training in Special Needs or Infant/Toddler care, or a related field (or willing to obtain with in the first year of employment).
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience working within communities, focusing on early childhood education or children with extra support needs.
  • CPR and First Aid Certification.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and contemporary issues.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.

Preferred:

  • Indigenous candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Seabird Islands culture, traditions, teachings, community dynamics.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to respond quickly and professionally to community or colleague needs and inquiries.
  • Lived experience as a member of a First Nations community.

Cultural Competency:

  • Deep understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and contemporary issues.
  • Understanding of intergenerational trauma and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and communities.
  • Experience working within Indigenous communities and applying culturally safe practices.
