Summary:
The Controller is a crucial position at MacKay Contracting Ltd., responsible for overseeing the company's accounting operations and ensuring that robust financial controls are in place to provide reliable and timely financial reporting. As an integral part of the management team, the Controller offers guidance and insight into the day-to-day financial operations of the company and champions a professional and accountable work environment.
Location & Hours:
This role is based in the Cranbrook office at 1600A Theatre Rd., Cranbrook, B.C., with regular hours from Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Occasional overtime may be required but is not a significant part of the role. Flexible working schedule
Responsibilities & Duties:
The Controller will primarily focus on overseeing the accounting functions, ensuring compliance with ASPE reporting standards, and providing leadership and support to the accounting team. Key responsibilities include:
- Oversight of Accounts Receivable & Payable:
- Supervising the AR and AP clerks, ensuring timely follow-up on invoices and payments
- Overseeing the onboarding process for new customers and vendors, including credit checks and processing purchase orders
- Managing automated AP software and ensuring discrepancies are promptly addressed
- Invoicing & General Ledger:
- Ensuring that invoicing is completed accurately and on time in collaboration with project management and operational staff
- Overseeing the correct allocation to GL accounts and reviewing journal entries as needed
- Payroll Management:
- Supervising the payroll clerk to ensure payroll processing is accurate and up to date
- Managing vacation accruals, benefits accounting, and the issuance of ROEs and T4s
- Staff Development & Performance:
- Managing and developing a full-time payroll clerk and a full-time AR/AP clerk
- Establishing performance metrics, providing regular feedback, and fostering a supportive work environment
- Compliance & Reporting:
- Ensuring compliance with all standard and regulatory requirements, including EHT, WCB, PST, and GST
- Overseeing timely filings for government-related payments and maintaining compliance with internal policies
- Managing weekly cash flow projections and reporting any anomalies or potential impacts to the Director of Finance
- Preparing regular financial reports, including weekly AR, AP, and cash balance reports, monthly financial statements, and yearly in-house financials
- Policy & System Management:
- Establishing and maintaining policies for the use and maintenance of system information
- Providing oversight for system conversions and ensuring experience with Trimble Viewpoint Spectrum is leveraged effectively
- Internal Controls:
- Developing and enforcing thorough internal controls to ensure compliance and accuracy in financial reporting
- Ensuring adherence to policies and procedures, and taking corrective action when necessary
- Strategic Insight:
- Reporting to the Director of Finance and providing strategic insights and recommendations to support the organization's goals
- Participating in brainstorming sessions to align financial operations with the company's strategic direction
Qualifications & Skills:
- Extensive experience with cloud-based and desktop accounting software; advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software
- Experience with system conversions
- Experience with Trimble Viewpoint would be an asset
- Strong organizational skills, integrity, credibility, and a commitment to the finance department's responsibilities in partnership with the Director of Finance
- Excellent problem-solving skills and logical thinking
- Proven experience in accounts payable and receivable, general ledger oversight, and payroll management
- Strong leadership abilities and a strategic approach to financial management
- Accounting designation preferred or senior-level accounting experience
- High level of initiative and a positive attitude
- Excellent interpersonal communication and influencing skills with internal and external stakeholders at all levels
- Exceptional computer skills
