Job Description: Strategy Officer

Reports to: Senior Manager, Communications and Strategy

Mission: To create an environment that inspires a passion for student success.

Desired Results:

  • Research, data collection, and analyses that support the development of a comprehensive, long-term strategy for the organization.
  • The groundwork for a comprehensive and community-informed five-year strategic plan developed and adopted by the organization.
  • The Algonquin Students Association (SA) has clear performance indicators and evaluation tools to track progress against strategic priorities.
  • Engagement activities that yield actionable insights and foster strong connection between stakeholders and the SAs long-term vision.

Nature and Scope

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Communications and Strategy, the Strategy Officer will work closely with all areas of the SA to research and assess internal and external strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges. The role will help the SA and its departments determine concrete, detailed plans to grow their audience, build community, and enhance client satisfaction. The Strategy Officer's work will inform recommendations to support the development, implementation, and evaluation of strategic planning and priorities.

Job Duties:

Research and Environmental Scanning

  • Conduct surveys, environmental scans, and student-focused research to better understand trends, needs, and priorities.
  • Conduct similar research on non-student clients of SA departments/services.
  • Analyze data and help translate insights into strategic themes and recommendations.
  • Monitor trends in student associations, nonprofits, and higher education to support future thinking.
  • Ensure the SAs mission, vision and values are a top consideration in all research, ensuring consistency and authenticity.

Strategic Planning

  • Partner in the development of our five-year strategic plan, including timelines, action plans, and success indicators.
  • Coordinate planning sessions, consultations, interviews, and workshops across all campuses.
  • Support alignment between SA strategy, student needs, and Algonquin Colleges evolving landscape.
  • Analyze market and industry trends that support the SAs long-term positioning and goals.

Student and Community Engagement

  • Engage students, SA Board members, SA employees, alumni, and other stakeholders in shaping the plan.
  • Collect and summarize feedback in a way that is respectful, meaningful, and action oriented.
  • Create clear, accessible summaries that make strategic information easy to understand.

Strategic Advice and Communication

  • Provide research-based recommendations to the Senior Manager and leadership team.
  • Help develop content for Board reports, strategy updates, and project dashboards.
  • Writing reports, case studies, business overviews, and market analyses

Desired Skills and Qualifications

  • Diploma in a business-related field considered an asset.
  • Experience in a role that supports business/organizational strategy or leadership considered an asset.
  • Experience as a project manager/analyst considered an asset
  • Exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with a high degree of accuracy in information.
  • Proven ability to conduct research, synthesize data and information, and present results to a general audience.
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain strong professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders and to work effectively at all organizational levels.
  • Experience in the post-secondary sector is highly desirable.

Compensation:

  • Salary: $29.15 per hour
  • Up to 30-hours per week
  • Requires some evening and weekend work and in-person work duties at all campuses and facilities
  • 4% vacation pay per pay period
  • Hybrid
