This summer student opportunity is with our Good Shepherd - Family Centre

Bakhita House welcomes newly arrived women refugee claimants to Hamilton by providing safe temporary housing, assisting with settlement and creating passages into the community.


How You Will Make an Impact

Reporting to the House Manager of Bakhita House or Designate, the Settlement Specialist enhances the dignity and quality of life of our clients, visitors and staff by providing efficient, courteous and quality services that support the residents and the day-to-day operation of the house.

  • Provide support to residents facing settlement challenges, including job searches, housing, and connecting to community resources.
  • Assist residents with basic settlement tasks, such as navigating the city, attending appointments, and using public transportation.
  • Plan and facilitate group information sessions and community outings to help residents meet their settlement goals.
  • Ensure effective communication with staff, management, and residents to maintain program operations and address resident needs.
  • Respect and protect the confidentiality of resident information and follow limits of confidentiality as applicable to the role.
  • Respond to emergency situations and provide crisis support, alerting appropriate staff to ensure resident safety.
  • Foster a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment by supporting residents in their daily activities and ensuring smooth program operations.
  • To request and schedule pest treatment and inspections
  • To communicate important updates and notices to residents

What You'll Bring to Our Team

  • Current enrollment in (or graduate in 2025) in a social services program or equivalent
  • Ability to set and maintain appropriate boundaries
  • Ability to address crises and problem-solve effectively
  • The ability to relate to individuals and groups of different abilities and cultures in an empathetic, non-judgmental manner
  • Strong and effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • CPR certification or willingness to be certified is also required
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt and manage change.
  • Creativity and flexibility in achieving desired outcomes.
  • Hospitable in dealings with clients/public / volunteers / staff, and other key stakeholders.
  • Available and responsive to the needs of others.
  • Respectful and compassionate demeanor.
  • Working with current computer software packages including Internet/E-mail applications

Hiring Criteria - the following criteria is established by Canada Summer Job:

This temporary full-time position is funded by Service Canada for youth between the ages of 15 to 30 years of age.

  • Applicants may be more than 30 years of age at the end of the employment period as long as they were 30 at the beginning of the employment period.
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
  • As per the Summer Canada Jobs Program criteria:
    • International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada.
    • Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, youth visa or work visa are ineligible.
