Overview:

Fintechs Canada is a not-for-profit association established in 2019 to represent the interests of the Canadian financial technology community. Initially focused on the paytech sector, the organization expanded its mandate in 2022 to encompass all fintechs, reflecting the growing diversity and significance of the industry. The association aims to open markets for financial technology companies in Canada by conducting independent research, fostering collaboration, advocating for favorable policies, and educating stakeholders about the impact and opportunities of fintech innovations.

Position Summary:

The Executive Director serves as the chief executive officer of Fintechs Canada, reporting directly to the Board of Directors. This individual is responsible for providing strategic leadership, managing day-to-day operations, and advancing the association's mission to create a more competitive and innovative financial sector in Canada. The Executive Director will work closely with members, policymakers, regulators, and other stakeholders to promote the interests of the fintech community. The Executive Director is a full-time position.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership:

  • Develop and implement strategic plans that align with the association's mission and objectives, as approved by the Board of Directors.
  • Monitor industry trends and policy developments to proactively position Fintechs Canada as a thought leader and advocate for the fintech sector.
  • Foster a culture of innovation and collaboration within the organization and among its members.

Advocacy and Policy Engagement:

  • Represent Fintechs Canada in interactions with government agencies, regulators, industry groups, and the media to advocate for policies that support fintech innovation and competition.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key policymakers and stakeholders to influence policy decisions and regulatory frameworks.
  • Oversee the preparation of policy submissions, position papers, and responses to government consultations on issues affecting the fintech industry.

Member Engagement and Services:

  • Recruit, retain, and engage a diverse membership base, ensuring that the association's services meet the evolving needs of its members.
  • Facilitate networking opportunities, knowledge sharing, and collaboration among members through events, working groups, and other initiatives.
  • Communicate regularly with members to keep them informed of industry developments, association activities, and advocacy efforts.

Operational and Financial Management:

  • Oversee the association's daily operations, ensuring efficient and effective implementation of programs and initiatives.
  • Manage the association's staff, currently a team of 3, ensuring we maintain a supportive and high-performance culture.
  • Develop and manage the annual budget, ensuring financial sustainability and accountability.
  • Implement appropriate financial controls and risk management strategies.

Stakeholder Relations and Communications:

  • Serve as the primary spokesperson for Fintechs Canada, articulating the association's positions and promoting its initiatives to external audiences.
  • Build and maintain strategic partnerships with other industry associations, academic institutions, and international counterparts to advance common objectives.
  • Oversee the development and execution of communication strategies, including media relations, publications, and digital content.

Governance Support:

  • Support the Board of Directors in fulfilling its governance responsibilities, including organizing meetings, preparing agendas and materials, and implementing board decisions.
  • Ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements applicable to not-for-profit organizations.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 3 years of senior leadership experience in the financial services, government relations or other applicable sectors, with a strong understanding of the fintech landscape in Canada.
  • Proven experience in advocacy, public policy, or government relations, preferably within a membership-based organization.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic and evolving environment.
  • Willingness to travel as required to represent the association and its members.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategic plans and manage organizational operations effectively.
  • Strong financial acumen, with experience in budgeting and financial management.
  • Familiarity with the regulatory environment affecting fintechs in Canada, including payments modernization, open banking, and anti-money laundering frameworks.
  • Experience working with or within government agencies or regulatory bodies related to financial services.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies and trends in the fintech sector, such as blockchain, digital currencies, and real-time payments.
  • Bilingualism (English and French) is considered an asset.
