Job Summary
Reporting to the Operations Manager/Chief Operating Engineer, the Shift Engineer will strive to
enhance the province of Ontarios quality of life by providing safe, clean, efficient, and reliable electricity. This role will be responsible for ensuring the safety of our employees and our neighbors, be a team player, possess strong leadership and analytical aptitude, show attention to detail, have excellent communication skills, be willing to take part in continuing education, be creative, think logically, have good problem-solving skills, and have excellent technical knowledge. This position is represented by the Power Workers Union.
Responsibilities
Typical duties and responsibilities include but are not inclusive of overseeing shift operations of the powerplant, troubleshooting technical issues and applying operational skills in maximizing energy production and efficiency. This includes the application of problem-solving skills in real time, managing outage activities and aiding in the development of and adherence to operation procedures. The position requires an operator with strong education, knowledge, and experience in the operation of power equipment, and its operational impact on station performance. Accountabilities will include overseeing the activities of assigned staff and planning, organizing, and assigning tasks to ensure the continuous safe, efficient, and economical operation of Napanee Generating Station.
In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to:
- Perform the function of Shift Engineer as defined by the Operating Engineers regulation
- Ontario Regulation 219/01
- Maintain the facilitys compliance with safety, environmental, NERC and commercial regulatory matters
- Oversee the daily operation of the facility during a 12hr rotating shift schedule
- Operate equipment safely and reliably, in accordance with O. Reg. 219/01. Execute start-up, shutdown and operation of the plant consistent with Atura Power operating procedures
- Daily work planning, including (but not limited to) the following activities
- Communications with the Commercial team, IESO, Hydro One and all other operations stakeholders
- Completion of Maximo work orders ensuring the adequacy of Assistant Shift Engineers Work Orders.
- Completion of all site documentation requirements including the Shift Engineer Log as required by OE Reg 219/01, ensuring completeness and accuracy according to all Atura procedures and policies.
- Shift changeover communication & documentation as necessary. Review of all shift logs from the Assistant Shift Engineer.
- Training
of
new employees - Engagement of Atura Power personnel as required to support critical management system processes including (but not limited to) the following:
- Management of Change
- Hazard Identification
- Safety Observations
- Work Authorizations / JSA`s
- Oversee and carry out all operating, monitoring and reporting activities for all units, common and auxiliary equipment, and systems associated with the CTGs, HRSGs, Steam Turbine, and BESS systems.
Coordinate and prioritize shift work activities in conjunction with the planning/work management function.
Acquire resources, as required, to meet changing/peak demand conditions.
When required, to perform the function of Chief Engineer in their absence.
Administer and oversee LOTO.
Administer Work Authorization, Job Safety Analysis.
Adhere and operate according to all current NGS Operating and Off Normal Operating Procedures.
Participate in the establishment and achievement of plant operational objectives
Communicate effectively through our computerized maintenance management system and be familiar with PLC/DCS/HMI interfaces
Responsibly perform various safety functions including lockout, hazard assessment/job safety analysis, active control of contractors
Participate in routine preventive and corrective maintenance on equipment
Qualifications/Competencies:
- Recognized interprovincial 2nd Class Power (Operating) Engineer Certificate. Consideration will be given to 3rd Class Power Engineers who can demonstrate progress towards their 2nd Class Power Engineer Certificate if accompanied with directly relevant work experience.
- 3 Years experience in combined/simple cycle power plants preferred
- Team player attitude, ready to collaborate and participate
- Willingness to work extended hours, as required, based on operational and business requirements, especially during outages or emergency call outs
This position requires candidates to:
Have and maintain a valid drivers license
Provide a criminal background check for employment

Ascend/descend 100 of stairs multiple times during a 12-hour shift

Working at heights, in confined spaces, as well as indoor and outdoors in various environments
