External Closing Date: May 18, 2025Role Snapshot (Our Elevator Pitch!)Reporting to the Supervisor, Regional Landfill, the Labourer I position is responsible for assisting in the maintenance and upkeep of landfill sites and related facilities. This role includes performing litter control, groundskeeping, general maintenance, and equipment operation, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental policies.Why Work With Us?The Essex-Windsor Solid Waste Authority (EWSWA) is the governmental agency charged with the responsibility of providing an economical and environmentally conscious integrated solid waste management system for the County of Essex (County) and the City of Windsor (City). The mission of the EWSWA is to provide programs to manage the solid, non-hazardous waste generated in the County and the City in an environmentally sound manner through processes which include, but are not necessarily limited to reduction, reuse, recycling, composting, and landfilling.What You'll DoIn this role, you will be responsible for:
1. Site Maintenance and Groundskeeping
  • Conduct onsite and offsite litter patrols, picking up litter on the side of the road/ditch and transporting it to the landfill to maintain cleanliness
  • Perform grounds maintenance tasks such as grass cutting, tree trimming, weed control, and snow removal
  • Maintain landfill sites, including fence repairs and assisting with pump station repairs
  • Painting bollards, scale railings or other equipment as needed
2. Equipment & Vehicle Maintenance
  • Perform routine maintenance and general repairs on fleet vehicles, landfill equipment, and ancillary equipment as directed
  • Inspect and maintain landfill methane gas collection lines
  • Operate and maintain small equipment, including tractors, ATVs, pickup trucks, weed whips, pumps, chain saw and other grass cutting equipment
  • Washing or power washing trucks, equipment, scale or any other equipment as needed
3. Operational Support and Compliance
  • Relieve or perform the duties of other personnel when required
  • Operate Leachate Land Application systems in accordance with Environmental Services policies and procedures or as directed
  • Perform or assist other staff with general maintenance and repairs to buildings and structures as needed
  • Perform other duties/tasks as assigned by management
What You BringEducation and Commitment to Growth:
  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or recognized equivalent
Experience and Expertise:
  • Relevant experience in site maintenance, groundskeeping, or equipment operation
  • Good mechanical skills with knowledge and experience in equipment maintenance
Skills and Abilities:
  • Good physical condition with the ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Ability to follow safety procedures and work as part of a team
Other Requirements:
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class “G” Ontario driver's license and have access to a personal vehicle for work-related travel within Windsor and/or the County of Essex
  • Must provide a Ministry of Transportation Driver Abstract (Uncertified)
  • Must provide a Police Information Check (PIC) document
Hours of Work
The full-time paid hours of work shall be forty (40) hours per week as scheduled, Monday through Friday between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., and Saturday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. All hours of work shall be five (5) days a week at the straight time hourly rate for the position, plus a one-half (½) hour unpaid lunch.
Work Schedule – It is understood and agreed that employees will work in accordance with a shift schedule. Shift schedules shall be posted at least fourteen (14) calendar days prior to such schedule becoming effective. The schedule shall not be changed once it has been posted unless mutually agreed upon by the Employer and the affected employee. The five (5) shifts will be scheduled on consecutive days unless mutually agreed upon by the Employer and the affected employee.What We Are OfferingAs a CUPE 2974.1 position, this role is on Band 4 with a starting hourly rate of $27.63, and that is just the beginning.
