Job Title: Summer Student
Department: Parks and Recreation & Public Works
Location: City of Melville
Employment Type: Seasonal (Summer Student Position)
Work Schedule: 4 days a week (compressed work schedule)
Duration: May - August
Salary: $15.60 per hour
Position Overview:
The City of Melville is seeking motivated and energetic students for the Summer Student position in the Parks and Recreation and Public Works departments. This position offers an opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience in public service while working in a collaborative team environment. The position follows a compressed 4-day work week, allowing you to make the most of your summer.
Key Responsibilities:
Parks and Recreation:
  • Assist with the maintenance and beautification of parks, trails, and green spaces, including mowing, weeding, and planting and watering.
  • Help with the setup and take-down of equipment for recreational events and programs.
  • Support staff in organizing and managing community recreation activities, including sports leagues, summer camps, and events.
  • Assist in cleaning and maintaining park facilities such as playgrounds, picnic areas, and sports fields.
  • Monitor and report any safety hazards or maintenance issues in parks and recreational areas.
Public Works:
  • Support the Public Works team in performing maintenance tasks for city streets, roads, and sidewalks.
  • Assist in the collection and disposal of waste and recycling materials.
  • Aid in the installation and maintenance of street signs, traffic lights, and other infrastructure components.
  • Perform routine inspections and assist in cleaning public spaces and city buildings.
  • Provide support for various public works projects as directed by supervisors.
Qualifications:
  • Must be enrolled in a full-time post-secondary program or returning to school in the fall.
  • Strong work ethic with a willingness to learn and take on new tasks.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Basic knowledge of landscaping, maintenance, and/or public works operations is an asset but not required.
  • Comfortable with physical work, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
Work Schedule:
  • This position follows a compressed 4-day work week (approximately 10-hour workdays).
  • Specific workdays and hours will be confirmed upon hire.
