Reporting to the General Manager of Recreation, the Aquatics Program Coordinator is responsible for the planning, coordination, and supervision of aquatic programs and operations. The Aquatics Program Coordinator oversees the daily operations of aquatic facilities, ensures the safety of patrons, and provides leadership and support to the aquatics team. They will ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, policies, and procedures. The Aquatics Program Coordinator supports labour relations by working within the framework of the collective agreement and fostering a respectful, productive work environment.


The Aquatics Program Coordinator will:

  • Plan, develop, and implement aquatic programs, including swim lessons, aquatic fitness classes, and special events under the guidance of the General Manager of Recreation.
  • Collaborate with the General Manager of Recreation to assess community needs and recommend new or modified programs.
  • Assists with analyzing statistical information and preparation of reports to summarize findings related to program delivery resultsensure high quality and consistent program delivery.
  • Assist in the recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and training of aquatic staff including interviews, screening, and completion of onboarding processes.
  • Support the scheduling, supervision, and performance management of head lifeguards and other aquatic staff.
  • Provide coaching and feedback to aquatics programming staff during their shifts, including in-program coaching and mentorship, empowering staff to deliver quality programs and excellent customer service.
  • Support the payroll process for aquatics staff by reviewing scheduled and submitted hours and validating shift changes, ensuring timely submission of hours worked, etc.
  • Ensure adherence to safety protocols, emergency procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with the design, implementation, and delivery of staff training sessions to ensure policies and procedures are communicated, quality standards are maintained and improved, staff are prepared for emergency response.
  • Conduct regular staff meetings and provide oversight for in-service training sessions.
  • Serve as a liaison between staff, participants, and community members to resolve issues and promote positive relationships, escalating to the General Manager of Recreation when necessary.
  • Ensure that records related to staff schedules, certifications, attendance, incidents, and program participation are accurate and up-to-date.
  • Assist with budget preparation and monitor aquatics program expenditures.
  • Respond to emergencies and incidents as needed, act as supervisor on duty during peak hours or special events.
  • Assist with emergency shift coverage as required, based on incumbent qualification

Qualifications:

  • Completion of post-secondary education in Recreation or a related discipline.
  • One (1) three (3) years of experience in aquatics including staffing, training, business operations and special projects. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
  • Current National Lifeguard certification preferred.
  • Current Standard First aid with CPR-C through an approved agency.
  • Current Swim Instructor certification preferred.
  • Current Lifesaving Instructors certification an asset.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and judgment when handling confidential, sensitive, and/or controversial information in accordance with the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy.
  • Develop, promote and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to deal with difficult customers/staff, diffuse emotionally-charged situations, and resolve customer/staff issues in a diplomatic and professional manner.
  • Intermediate interpersonal, time management, organizational, problem solving, communication (verbal and written), teamwork and leadership skills
  • Demonstrated intermediate level of knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • An understanding of database applications (ACTIVE Net experience is an asset).
  • An understanding of applicable legislation and bylaws as they pertain to Aquatics (Public pool regulations).
  • Availability on a rotational basis to assist with after-hour inquires/situations, and/or to attend evening/weekend meetings or special events.
