Position: Cooks Assistant

Position Type: Full-Time (Mon-Fri 8:00am - 2:30pm)

GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY STATEMENT

The Cook's Assistant will support the cafeteria staff in preparing and serving meals to students in at the Wekoqmaq Mikmaw School. This role involves assisting with food preparation, maintaining cleanliness and organization in the kitchen, and ensuring that all food safety and hygiene standards are met. The Cook's Assistant will work collaboratively with the cafeteria team to provide nutritious and appealing meals to students.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Food Preparation:
    • Assist in the preparation of meals, including chopping vegetables, preparing ingredients, and assembling dishes.
    • Follow recipes and instructions provided by the Head Cook.
    • Assist in cooking and baking as needed.
  • Serving Meals:
    • Help set up serving stations and ensure they are well-stocked.
    • Serve food to students in a friendly and efficient manner.
    • Monitor portions and ensure each student receives appropriate servings.
  • Cleaning and Sanitizing:
    • Maintain cleanliness in the kitchen and cafeteria areas, including washing dishes, utensils, and equipment.
    • Clean and sanitize countertops, tables, and serving areas.
    • Follow proper procedures for food safety and hygiene.
  • Inventory and Supplies:
    • Assist in receiving and storing deliveries of food and supplies.
    • Monitor inventory levels and notify the Head Cook when supplies need to be replenished.
  • Customer Service:
    • Interact with students and staff in a friendly and respectful manner.
    • Address any concerns or special dietary needs as directed by the Head Cook.
  • Other Duties:
    • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Head Cook.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Prior experience in food preparation or a similar role is preferred.
  • Possession of a valid food handling certification is required or willingness to obtain upon hire.
  • Knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to speak Mi'kmaq is considered an asset.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Clear criminal reference check, vulnerable sector screening, and child abuse registry check required.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

This position reports to:

- Head Cook

CONTACTS

Internal:

Head Cook: For daily task assignments, performance feedback, and any immediate concerns.

School Administration: For matters related to school policies, events, and overall coordination within the school.

External:

Food Suppliers: For receiving and verifying deliveries of food and supplies.

Health Inspectors: For ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The Cook's Assistant will work in a kitchen environment with exposure to heat, noise, and kitchen equipment.
  • The role may require standing, bending, and lifting throughout the shift.
