Job Description

Apex is looking for a Health, Safety and Environment Advisor to join our organization. This full time position will be based out of our head office in Sherwood Park and will require periodic travel to projects throughout Western Canada.

The Leadership Team at Apex has direct safety-specific managerial experience, and as such, have an unwavering commitment to the success of the health and safety management system. Reporting directly to the COO, the HSE Advisor will ensure compliance, continual improvement and the evolution of the health and safety program. They will bring a high attention to detail, energy and exceptional communication skills. In this role, the HSE Advisor will not only provide guidance and effective implementation but be instrumental in fostering the culture and community within Apex.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform new hire orientations and assist operations team with onboarding and mobilizations.
  • Ensure site-specific and formal hazard assessments are completed and reviewed as required.
  • Perform weekly field visits, conducting site-specific safety meetings, field audits and inspections.
  • Develop and facilitate regular engaging company-wide safety meetings.
  • Monitor and ensure conformance with company health and safety document requirements and submission deadlines.
  • Internal and external COR audit maintenance.
  • Maintenance of all contractor compliance networks (ISN, Avetta, ComplyWorks, etc.)
  • Train and lead personnel in investigations and root cause analysis.
  • Develop and maintain the safety training and competency program.
  • Regular monitoring and reporting on HSE deliverables, KPIs and trends to senior management.
  • Oversee the subcontractor management program.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of current OH&S legislation, Federal and Provincial laws in all regions of operation.
  • Perform general safety-related administrative duties and manage safety supplies inventory.
  • Procedural and policy development and implementation as required.
  • Development of site-specific emergency response plans.
  • Management of companys safety compliance software.

Skills, Knowledge & Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) designation is required.
  • Certificate or Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) is considered an asset.
  • Current ACSA Auditor Training Certification.
  • Minimum of 2 years field safety experience.
  • Experience working in an industrial construction or civil engineering company is beneficial.
  • Strong understanding of remote worksite operations, logistics and workflows.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Previous experience safety compliance software such as Workhub or SiteDocs is benefical.
  • Excellent communication skills, effective time management and attention to detail.
  • This is a safety-sensitive position and will be subject to pre-access drug and alcohol screening.
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers Licence.
