Intermediate Associate, Civil/Structural Group

Our Civil/Structural group provides a full range of services relating to the integrity of the built environment; failure analysis of concrete, steel, timber, and masonry structures; structural assessment of residential/commercial buildings and infrastructures; as well as professional consultation services during construction, structural remediation, and rehabilitation.

Purpose:

The Intermediate Civil/Structural Associate will report directly to the Practice Lead/Senior Associate; collaborate with other subject matter experts to consult with clients; perform examinations, testing, and analysis; and prepare technical reports in a clear, concise, efficient, and professional manner.

Role responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):

  • Perform site examinations, document review, and effectively communicate investigation and analysis findings to colleagues and clients.
  • Prepare structural calculations/analyses, structural simulations, and technical drawings from field measurements, sketches, and other data.
  • Carry out research on the latest scientific findings in structural engineering.
  • Review, interpret and follow national/international codes and standards in structural engineering.
  • Prepare technical reports and drawings based upon sound investigations and analysis.
  • Contribute to writing technical/scientific papers, codes/standards, and thought leadership.
  • Begin to independently manage client service deadlines, budgeting, invoicing, and accounts receivable on their projects according to organizational best practices.
  • Begin to directly liaise with clients on a regular basis and provide updates throughout the investigation.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the firm's mission, vision and values.
  • Develop an understanding of the market and begin to contribute to marketing events, and moving towards independent marketing presence.
  • Work in a collaborative environment, both on your team and across disciplines.
  • Work towards providing expert testimony in court.

Expectations:

  • Spend approximately 70% of your time working on client files
  • Spend approximately 10% of your time on industry and marketing activities
  • Spend approximately 20% of your time on professional development

Requirements:

  • Degree in Structural Engineering
  • 3-7 years experience in Structural Engineering
  • Registered or eligible to become a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with EGBC
  • Excellent technical writing skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Good presentation skills
  • Valid Canadian driver's license
  • Willing and able to travel throughout Canada

Competencies and Attributes:

  • Proficient in conventional structural analysis with strong analytical skills
  • Solid foundational knowledge in structural engineering and earthquake engineering
  • Strong background in stability analysis, response spectra analysis and seismic design/analysis
  • Experience in designing and assessing concrete, steel, timber, and masonry structures
  • Effective research skills within structural engineering using research articles
  • Competence in using codes and standards such as BC Building Code, National Building Code of Canada, fib Model Code, etc.
  • Proficient in at least one advanced (nonlinear) structural analysis finite element program (e.g., ABAQUS, DIANA, ANSYS)
  • Willingness to embrace advanced technologies for structural inspection, including aerial imaging using drones, terrestrial laser scanning, photogrammetry, etc.
  • Effective project management abilities
  • Effective collaboration with other disciplines such as Geotechnical Engineering, Building Science, Building & Fire Code, etc.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask
  • Self-motivated with the ability to self-manage
  • Commitment to continuous learning and professional development
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written
  • Proficient in learning computer applications including business operation metrics
  • Excellent teamwork skills, with the ability to work independently
  • Flexibility in adapting to various tasks and challenges
