Job Description

The HR Business Partner provides support throughout the company in staffing, onboarding, employee and labour relations, performance management, organizational development, training, and general HR practices. The HR Business Partner is engaged in providing day to day guidance to the leadership team and employees across Canada and the United States.

General Responsibilities

  • Supports our various operations to execute and improve HR practices, process decisions, and programs recognizing the differing operational needs
  • Effectively communicate and execute corporate programs leveraging relationships and expertise to articulate value and ensure adoption
  • Manage workers compensation/leaves claims including coordination with the benefits and payroll team and maintain communication with all stakeholders
  • Conduct internal investigations on policy infractions and legislative enquiries
  • Support HR activities including recruitment, staffing, onboarding, performance management, and training
  • Participate in labour and employee relations initiatives and provide direction on confidential labour and employee issues involving unions, Provincial/State employment and labour ministries, and human rights bodies
  • Support operational teams in managing the performance of their teams
  • Provide mentorship and coaching to managers and supervisors on a broad range of HR issues and facilitate in-house training initiatives aligned with expertise
  • Build strong relationships and rapport with all levels of management and employees throughout the organization
  • Actively engage in and participate in and/or provide support services for special organizational projects related to the development of people

Skills, knowledge & Abilities

  • Demonstrates initiative to independently plan, organize, and prioritize workload leading to successful implementation of comprehensive projects in a constantly changing dynamic environment
  • Working knowledge of legislation, regulations, and best practices relevant to human resources and how practices vary between Provincial or State jurisdictions
  • Sound analytical, problem solving and negotiation skills with an ability to understand a broad range of HR issues and resolve conflict situations in a diplomatic manner
  • Demonstrates leadership including establishing focus, providing motivational support, fostering teamwork, and empowering others
  • Ability to establish rapport with people and build relationships
  • Demonstrates effective oral and written communication with employees and external agencies
  • Skilled in the use of computer equipment, operating systems, Word, Excel, and HRIS (UKG) with the ability to develop reports as required
  • Demonstrates information gathering skills used to find and identify essential information
  • Ability to exercise discretion and good judgment in providing information to internal or external customers in a courteous and tactful manner with regard to sensitive or confidential issues

Education & Experience

  • Experience building relationships based on trust and credibility with managers, supervisors, employees, and government agencies
  • Experience conducting investigations, responding to grievances and employment complaints, and interpreting non-union and union agreement
  • Minimum of five (5) years' progressive responsibility in Human Resources with experience delivering in all areas of HR
  • Degree or diploma in human resource or industrial relations and/or a CPHR designation are assets
  • Continual participation in learning opportunities in the human resource field is expected

Details Specific to Business Unit

  • Travel to various operating sites throughout Canada and the US will be required on a regular basis; hold and maintain a valid driver's license
  • Meet all customer site and security requirements including ability to wear appropriate PPE, pass a background check, and meet drug and alcohol testing requirements
  • Ensure confidentiality is maintained in all matters
