POSITION SUMMARY

The Youth Employment and Skills Program (YESP) employee will be working for Mekw'xólhmet te Sq'éwqel- Land Taxation and Governance at Seabird Island Band. The position will include a mix of fieldwork, agricultural support, community engagement and some office tasks. This position will primarily be supporting the Food Sovereignty initiatives at Seabird Island Band such as food security, food sovereignty and traditional foods. The selected candidate will gain experience in agriculture, fieldwork, data collection, community engagement, and research.

Requirements:

  • Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 at the start date of employment.
  • Must be unemployed or underemployed.
  • Must be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident of Canada or a status refugee under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
  • Employee must not receive Employment Insurance (EI) during their employment in this position.
  • Must identify as Indigenous, Aboriginal, Inuit, or Métis.

This is a term position that will end on October 1st, 2024.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Provide general administrative and clerical support for routine office tasks.
  • Assist in resolving any administrative problems.
  • Maintaining community gardens includes but not limited to watering, weeding, planting various plants.
  • Conducting literary research and revision.
  • Field research on invasive species, native plants, etc.
  • Plant cultivation and maintenance.
  • Community outreach for ongoing programs and services
  • Assisting in research of grants/proposals when applicable.
  • Maintain an up-to-date filing system.
  • Printing, copying, scanning, and sorting meeting packages as required.
  • Other duties or responsibilities as assigned by your Supervisor, Manager, Director, Executive Director or Chief & Council.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Active listening and critical thinking are skills that are considered an asset.
  • Experience working in gardens is an asset.
  • Experience working outdoors and/or an eagerness to do so.
  • Experience with ArcGIS is an asset but not required prior to starting in the position.
  • Experience collecting data/notes in the field is an asset but not required prior to starting the position.
  • Proficient computer skills with the Microsoft Office 365 Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams.)
  • Proficient interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills.
  • Ability to agree as well as adhere to Seabird Island Band Human Resources (HR), Finance, and Information Technology (IT) Policies and Procedures, etc.
  • Knowledge, respect and understanding of Stó: lō culture, traditions and language or willingness to learn.
  • Experience working with First Nations community is considered an asset.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check (CRC)

  • Lands Program Supervisor
