Who we are? We are a leader in First Nation Health. Our foundation is Indigenous Health in Indigenous Hands. We provide accessible, quality, culturally safe and holistic health care that supports and enhances the wellness of individuals, families, and communities. We work with our 11 First Nation community partners in the provision of primary health care, traditional healing, mental wellness and addictions, home and community support services and health promotion services. We have recently been approved as the first Indigenous lead Ontario Health Team by the Ministry of Health.

The opportunity: Reporting to the Director of Primary Health Care, the General Practitioner (MD) is responsible to provide physician services for Maamwesying North Shore Community Health Services Inc. The scope of this service is within an inter-disciplinary team to provide primary care to clients and their families within a client-centred care model emphasizing health promotion and client education.

What you need to bring with you:

  • A medical degree and rotating internship from a recognized university
  • License to practice from the Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons
  • Three to five years experience in a primary health care setting, First Nation community-based is an asset
  • Holding a certificate in Buprenorphine Assisted Treatment of Opioid Dependence is an asset
  • Knowledge and interest in health issues affecting Indigenous people
  • Demonstrated commitment to and knowledge of community-based health care and resources
  • Must have a valid Ontario Driver's License and access to a reliable vehicle
  • A clear criminal reference check
  • Respect for, sensitivity towards, as well as knowledge and understanding of Anishinabek culture and language and the Seven Grandfather Teachings
  • Experience in the use of personal computers, various word processing, spreadsheets
  • Experience in the use of electronic health records would be a definite asset
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and problem resolution skills
  • Ability to work independently with limited direction
  • A willingness to accept changes in work practices and technology
  • Ability to work as part of an inter-disciplinary team
  • Ability to work flexible hours including unplanned overtime

What to expect? Given the traditional practices of Indigenous people, from time-to-time exposure to smoke from the burning of sacred medicines such as tobacco, sweet grass, sage, or cedar may occur. Hiring of Indigenous People will be given preference, as allowed under Section 14 of the Ontario Human Rights Code – Special Programs.
