Today, over one thousand people work in over 20 countries to help us make the Internet better. If this sounds exciting to you, join the herd!

About the Opportunity:

We are looking for a Senior Cloud Network Engineer to join our TCX Cloud Network team.

In this role, you will partner with multiple technical teams (Ting Fiber Network Architecture, TCX Cloud Operations, NOC, etc.) and product owners to build, optimize, and maintain a highly available, large-scale access network.

The candidate will be responsible for bridging the gap between the network engineers handling the physical topology and the engineers responsible for the TCX Cloud Infrastructure.

The focus will be on operating our cloud network infrastructure that supports all Tucows services and business units. This includes vendor management, automation systems, and monitoring infrastructure.

Engineers who thrive at the intersections of "DevOps" tooling (scripting, CI/CD testing, source of truth, etc.), Automation (Ansible, Salt), IP networking, and strong peer collaboration are encouraged to apply.

This is a remote position for applicants residing in Canada.

What You'll Be Doing:
  • Design and Implementation: Design, configure, implement, test, and optimize a highly available global cloud network infrastructure, ensuring alignment with business requirements and industry best practices.
  • Optimization: Continuously optimize the network infrastructure for performance, reliability, and scalability.
  • Documentation: Develop comprehensive A-Z documentation for network configurations, procedures, and standards.
  • Visual Diagrams: Create detailed visual diagrams to represent network architecture and design.
  • Collaboration:
  • Participate in planning sessions with the Ting Network Architecture team (MPLS, L3 routing) for new IP project rollouts, expansions, and special project implementations.
  • Work closely with other TCX Infrastructure teams, such as Cloud Operations, to provide solutions to all Tucows lines of business.
  • Problem Resolution: Analyze and resolve network issues in a timely and accurate manner, addressing concerns related to security, VPNs, routing, switching, tenant segregation, and related cloud infrastructure.
  • Continuous Improvement:
  • Proactively offer proposals to improve the network for both technical and operational efficiency.
  • Participate in post-mortem analysis and propose changes to prevent similar issues in the future.
  • Drive monitoring efforts with the NOC to improve tooling and resolution processes.
  • Receive and provide mentorship for peers and senior leadership.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Education:
  • University degree and/or IT Diploma from a recognized technical institution, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience:
  • Over 10 years of proven experience in designing, operating, and implementing highly available networks and cloud-based networks.
  • More than 5 years in a senior role.
  • Over 3 years of experience with security products such as firewalls and VPNs.
  • At least 3 years of experience with OpenStack (preferred).
  • At least 3 years of experience with Python programming (preferred)
  • Technical Skills:
  • Proficient in wide-area networking, global BGP routing, MPLS, and datacenter switching architectures.
  • Experience with load-balancing products.
  • Familiarity with vendors such as Cisco, Juniper, A10, and Cumulus is an asset.
  • Certifications are an asset, including but not limited to CCIE, CCNP-R&S, CCDP, CCNP-Security, JNCIA, JNCIP, JNCIE, ITIL, etc.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Network Architecture Expertise: In-depth understanding of various network architectures and protocols, including their strengths, weaknesses, and appropriate applications.
  • Customer-Centric Focus: Advocate for our users, peers, and overall service as a whole.
  • Attention to Detail: Keen eye for detail and thoroughness.
  • Troubleshooting Skills: Strong abilities in troubleshooting, problem-solving, and fault isolation, including data packet analysis.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical issues to non-technical individuals.
  • Organizational Skills: Proficient in organizational, project, and program management planning.
  • Automation Skills: Proficiency in scripting and programming automation tools such as Salt, Ansible, and Python.
  • Collaboration Tools: Familiarity with collaboration tools like Google Meet, Slack, and Lucidchart.
  • Project Management Tools: Comfortable using project management tools such as Jira, Wrike, or other project management suites.
  • On-Call Availability: Available for on-call duties, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
