Position Purpose

Responsible for providing general labour duties within the Operations & Infrastructure Department. For full details, please see attached job description.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ontario High School Diploma or equivalent;
  • Minimum one year's previous related experience,
  • Experience in the use of municipal operations and maintenance equipment, including winter maintenance equipment such as tractors, grass-cutting equipment, sidewalk snow clearing machines and four-wheel drive plow trucks, skid steer tractors etc.
  • Valid Class G Driver's Licence. DZ or AZ Driver's Licence is considered an asset.
  • Driver's Abstract in good standing required to operate Corporation vehicles;

JOB DESCRIPTION

Title: Seasonal Roads Labourer

Position #: SE45

Department: Operations and Infrastructure

Division: Operations - Roads

Reports To: Roads Supervisor

Position Summary

Responsible for providing general labour duties within the Operations & Infrastructure Department.

Responsibilities

  • Provides general labour for road maintenance activities including pot-hole filling, grass cutting, manual earth excavating, topsoil spreading, placing sod, placing concrete and asphalt, delivering materials on job sites, loading vehicles, washing and maintaining equipment, and other similar duties.
  • Provides Winter Maintenance activities for municipal infrastructure including: sidewalks, trails, and the exterior walkways and parking lots of municipal facilities using sidewalk snow plows (tractor and articulated wheel-loaders) and snow blowers, shovels, and four-wheel drive pick-up trucks equipped with plows and sanders.
  • Provides general maintenance activities including assisting with tree removal operations, picking up litter, removing roadside debris, removing waste from garbage receptacles, landscaping and other similar duties.
  • Maintains the Town work yards (including shop and garage) through regular cleaning, painting and/or minor repairs including janitorial duties.
  • Assists Town staff and volunteers during special events.
  • Transports equipment/supplies from one location, to another as required.
  • Responsible for keeping accurate log documentation for hours of service in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act.
  • Maintains written logs of inspections and work activities, including the use of digital or electronic recording keeping systems.
  • Provides detailed accounts and reports for accidents, incidents, etc. to aid in Insurance Claim investigations.
  • Independently performs road patrols twice daily in winter months in accordance with Ontario Regulation 239/02 of the Municipal Act, provides detailed documentation of findings, and takes any corrective measures that may be needed, as directed.
  • Performs set up and ensures that a traffic protection plan is in place and is appropriate for the area that is needed according to Book 7.
  • Is responsible for operating equipment to complete all necessary duties, tractor, articulated wheel-loaders, steam machine, light-duty vehicles, dump trucks and other equipment as assigned.
  • Maintains own safety and the safety of others by working in compliance with all applicable Federal and Provincial legislation and with the health and safety practices and procedures established by the Corporation.
  • Participates in the Town's Health & Safety Program and complies with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, other applicable legislation and best practices.
  • Maintains knowledge of and adheres to all Town of Georgina Policies and Procedures.
  • Participates in ongoing Training and Development and ensures all mandatory requirements are met and maintained.
  • Performs shift work as required
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Training:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience:

  • Minimum one year's previous related experience,
  • Experience in the use of municipal operations and maintenance equipment, including winter maintenance equipment such as tractors, grass-cutting equipment, sidewalk snow clearing machines and four-wheel drive plow trucks, skid steer tractors etc.
  • Experience working in a work environment that uses work-order systems, electronic record keeping, electronic communication (email and messaging) and telecommunications devices.
  • Up to 3 months period of adjustment.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with the general public.
  • Ability to maintain written logs of inspections and work activities, including the use of digital or electronic recording keeping systems.
  • Valid Class G Driver's Licence. DZ or AZ Driver's Licence is considered an asset.
  • Ability to operate municipal equipment including vehicles and small tools. Ability to use a chainsaw and other gasoline-powered tools is required.
  • Driver's Abstract in good standing required to operate Corporation vehicles;

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to lift of up to 50 pounds; continuous physical exertion is required during regular duties.
  • Must be able to stand and perform repetitive motions for an extended period of time.
  • Attention to detail is required.
  • Must be available to work all scheduled shifts including morning, day and night shift, and weekends as assigned.
