Education Required

  • Current BC College of Teachers Full Practicing Certificate; Bachelor of Education.
  • Valis First Aid.

Experience Required

  • Minimum 3 years' experience or more working with children or youth.

Overtime Status

Non-exempt.

JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Little Chiefs Lead Teacher, the Kindergarten Teacher will foster and facilitate the intellectual and social development of the children. You will teach children with patience and creativity. The Teacher's duties include designing a teaching plan and using activities and instructional methods to motivate children.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Deliver the Ministry of Education Primary Curriculum.
  2. Oversee the day-to-day operation of the classroom.
  3. Assist students with integration into the classroom and school setting.
  4. Help students individually or in small groups with assignments and learning concepts under the supervision of a classroom teacher.
  5. Assist in the school library or office and perform other duties assigned by the Lead Teacher.
  6. Assess student needs and if necessary, develop an Individual Education Plan (IEP)
  7. Participate in team meetings, IEP development, and staff meetings as required.
  8. Collaborate with the Ministry of Education, the First Nation Schools Association, and the First Nations Education Steering Committee regarding program delivery.
  9. Consult with parent(s)/ caregivers on a regular and timely basis.
  10. Advocate for the education of the children and families
  11. Working creatively and collaboratively with Little Chiefs Primary School staff and Williams Lake First Nation Education Department
  12. Attend meetings, training, and professional learning sessions (e.g., first aid, CPR, emergency procedures, behavior management, etc.) for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.
  13. Supports the mission, vision, and values of Williams Lake First Nation.
  14. Contributes to the WLFN's ongoing success by accomplishing other duties as required or assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of the local First Nations history, culture, language, and traditions
  • Knowledge of Saxon Math and Read Well programs would be an asset.
  • Strong background in Elementary Education and specialized training in areas of Reading and numeracy
  • Recent teaching experience
  • Sustained commitment to Literacy and Numeracy (Read Well and Saxon Math knowledge)
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office software at an intermediate/advanced level

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Elementary school setting with field trips out of the community.
  • To be aware of sensitivity, confidentiality, and urgency of requests while balancing other work commitments.
  • Travel will be required.
  • Non-standard hours of work – May be required to accommodate the community needs and that may consist of evenings and weekends.

  • Must be able to obtain and provide an attestation of two doses of federally approved COVID-19 vaccination.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Criminal Records Check

  • Must provide a vehicle in good operating condition and appropriate vehicle insurance to meet program requirements OR access to company vehicle is provided and requires a valid Driver's License.
