Temporary Works Engineer (P.Eng)

Job Description:

As a Temporary Works Engineer within our Means & Methods department at Ontario Transit Group (OTG), you will hold a pivotal role in managing and executing temporary works for a significant construction endeavor—the Ontario Metro Line South project. This ambitious initiative encompasses six underground stations, one ground-level station, two tunnel boring machines spanning 5.8 kilometers, and intricate cavity excavations.

  • Internal Collaboration: Collaborate closely with the methods, construction, and design teams to identify temporary work requirements and define all constraints and specifications.

  • External Coordination: Engage in external coordination with an independent local designer to optimize proposed designs and ensure comprehensive coverage of all project requirements.

  • Temporary Structure Design: Take charge of designing temporary structures, including the preparation of calculation notes, design drawings, shop drawings, and the necessary stamping of documents.

  • Safety Advocate: Promote a positive work health and safety culture, prepare temporary works permits, and communicate critical points to Temporary Works inspectors to ensure on-site compliance with design, procedures, and testing requirements.

  • Strong Team Player: Collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams and communicate clearly to drive project success.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • 5 to 7 years of experience in front-line engineering and construction projects.

  • Professional Engineering (P.Eng) license is required.

  • Ability to thrive in a high-pressure, deadline-oriented environment while maintaining strong attention to detail and multitasking capabilities.

  • In-depth knowledge of construction methods, particularly for underground and infrastructure projects.

  • A technical background with prior design experience is mandatory.

  • Proficiency in various aspects of temporary works, including formwork, scaffolding, propping, steel structures, working platforms, balustrades, pedestrian accesses, support for utilities, access solutions like suspended staircases and temporary lifts, and tunnel boring machine logistics.

  • Commitment to safety, with a focus on a positive work health and safety culture.

  • Exceptional attention to detail, a commitment to continuous learning, and adept problem-solving capabilities.

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit.

Ontario Line South

Our team is mobilizing its design and construction crews, with major works to commence in 2023. The South Civil contract is anticipated to be completed in 2030.

The project will strengthen Ontario's economy by supporting an estimated 1,500 jobs at the peak of construction.

What is the project?

  • A six-kilometre tunnel and associated tunnelling works from Exhibition to Don Yard portal (west of the Don River)
  • Stations:
    • One above-ground station to be integrated with the existing GO Transit Exhibition Station
    • Two underground stations to be integrated with the existing TTC Osgoode and Queen subway stations
    • Four new underground stations (King/Bathurst, Queen/Spadina, Moss Park, Corktown.
