Safety Program Leader

Prairie Bus Lines is seeking a Safety Program Leader to support its Red Deer and surrounding area locations. As a key partner and resource to the local operations team and leaders, you'll respond to and investigate safety hazards, near misses and incidents and, most importantly, drive the development and implementation of people and operational safety programs that push the organization toward safety culture and performance excellence.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement proactive local safety programs, policies, safe work procedures and initiatives that improve local safety performance and compliance with both internal and external occupational health and safety and transportation safety requirements
  • Be present in the operation to build relationships with frontline employees, lead small group safety meetings (toolbox talks), support training drills, identify hazards and foster the local safety culture
  • Conduct investigations of reported hazards, near misses and incidents
  • Manage collision files in collaboration with the company's adjustors and insurers
  • Respond on-scene to significant collisions and other safety incidents
  • Develop and present material at employee safety meetings
  • Lead the preparation for the annual certificate of recognition (COR) and transportation safety audits
  • Support the local joint occupational health and safety committee meetings, inspections and other activities
  • Report and manage workplace injury claims and cases
  • Monitor operations to ensure compliance with internal and external requirements
  • Maintain current and accurate safety records

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Three years in health and safety or transportation safety roles
  • Experience in school bus operations (preferred) or other experience in the transportation industry
  • Hands-on experience with tactical safety activities, such as incident investigations, hazard assessments, workplace inspections, joint occupational health and safety committee leadership, ergonomic assessments, etc.
  • Experience with the certificate of recognition (COR) program and transportation/national safety code audits and compliance
  • A class 5 driver's license with a clean abstract and a willingness to upgrade to a class 2QS (note, a class 2 license is considered an asset)
  • A proven ability to establish rapport with a diverse frontline workforce coupled with excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite office and the aptitude to quickly learn other products used by the company
  • An occupational health and safety certificate or diploma (desired); a safety designation or certification is considered an asset – e.g., CRSP, CRST, CTSP, NCSO, CHSC, etc.
  • Experience with workers' compensation claims management and return-to-work planning

Remuneration:

This a full-time position with a salary of $54,000 annually, plus benefits.
