SPORTS FIELDS AND TURF TECHNICIAN – PARKS
Reporting to: Supervisor of Parks and Forestry
Department: Parks
Classification: PERMANENT Full Time; Unionized
Salary Range: $30.61/hour as per Schedule “A”
Hours of Work: As per CA.
Starting Date: June 2024

Responsibilities
  1. Performs effective care, inspections, maintenance, repairs and develops:
    • Sports Fields- all City owned fields and play surfaces,
    • Turf- sports turf, park land, and other City maintained turf,
    • Playgrounds- all City maintained playgrounds and play surfaces.
  2. Provides technical direction and guidance to staff to ensure proper practices and techniques are being implemented for the maintenance of turf, sports fields, and playgrounds. Assist with training temporary and summer staff.
  3. Assists Supervisor with the preparation and evaluation of tenders including but not limited to sport field renovations, and park infrastructure tenders. Assist with planning and organizing contracted work, scheduling contract start-up, inspecting contracted work, completing documentation of contracted services, and reporting any health and safety violations.
  4. Liaises with user groups, schools and volunteer groups and provide information, advice and directions regarding park and sports field usage.
  5. Assists with Parks by-law and property standards related issues.
  6. Operates machinery such as, but not exclusively: vehicles, commercial mowers, tractors, chainsaws, stump grinder, woodchipper, small equipment.
  7. Responsible and accountable for providing general information to the public and assisting them with their concerns and complaints when possible.
  8. Assists with setup and takedown of special events and city functions.
  9. Completes minor equipment repairs and maintenance or coordinates through a trades person the repair of said equipment as directed by the Supervisor of Parks and Forestry.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned from time to time.
QualificationsEssential:
  • Post-secondary school certificate in Turf Managers Short Course or equivalent/relevant education from a recognized institution
  • 5 years of experience in sports field maintenance and irrigation systems
  • Intermediate computer skills, especially in the use of MS Office
  • Valid Class “DZ” Driver's License and good driving history.
  • Currently possess or willing to obtain Standard First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Currently possess or willing to obtain Landscape Exterminator Class Applicator's License from the Ministry of Environment
  • Currently possess or willing to obtain a Registered Spray Pad Practitioner Certificate
  • Currently possess or willing to obtain a Registered Playground Practitioner Course
  • Currently possess or willing to obtain Chainsaw and Wood Chipper Training for Forestry emergencies, Fall Arrest and Working at Heights training
Preferred:
  • Experience operating a wide variety of heavy equipment including excavator, backhoe and pay loader is an asset.
  • Training with MTO Book 7 for Temporary Conditions, and proven knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other applicable legislation is an asset.
Working Conditions
  • Subject to working in all weather conditions.
  • Works in dirty conditions and is required to do heavy lifting.
  • Subject to shift work and overtime as required.
  • Required to participate in rotational weekend and holiday on-call periods.
