The Agency

The Calgary John Howard Society (CJHS) is a charity that reduces crime and makes Calgary communities safer by helping youth and adults make positive changes and move away from criminal behaviour. The Program

The Housing Coordinator will support the Housing Outreach Team comprised of Roofs for Youth (R4Y) program and the Adult Housing Reintegration Program (AHRP). Both of these programs are Calgary Homeless Foundation (CHF) funded programs that operates within the Calgary Homeless Serving System of Care (CHSSC) to provide support for homeless youth and adults or youth and adults at risk of homelessness; helping them successfully develop their living skills and meet their self-defined goals for independence. Participants are either justice system involved or at risk of justice system involvement, lack stable housing, and have identified the need for intensive case-management support. The Housing program operates within the CJHS Natural Supports, Harm Reduction, Trauma-Informed, Diversity, and Restorative practice framework. Participants receive a continuum of services including discharge planning, housing assistance, justice system navigation, job placement and skills training, educational opportunities, connections to natural supports, basic needs, life skills, and intensive case management.

The Position

The Housing Coordinator will be a member of the Housing leadership team and work collaboratively with the Housing Outreach Team (AHRP and R4Y). They will report to the Community Reintegration Manager. Duties include:

  • Sourcing new market and non-market housing opportunities for youth and adults that are experiencing homelessness and require intensive case- management supports to maintain housing.
  • Balancing the needs of program participants to achieve stability in safe, client-centered, and trauma-informed housing placement with those of both landlords and the community.
  • Developing and nurturing long-term partnerships with property management companies, non-profit housing providers, and private-landlords.
  • Approving and tracking all expenses submitted by the Housing Support Caseworkers for moving, subsidy, utilities, insurance, property repair, damage deposits, and other housing related expenses.
  • Leading the Housing Support Caseworkers in conflict resolution between our program participants and landlords. - guided by a thorough understanding of the Residential Tenancy Act. Areas of conflict can include: general housekeeping, rent payment, guest management, substance use, and property damage.
  • Liaising with the CJHS Operations Department to complete repairs and maintenance required on properties housing program participants and ensuring that all work done aligns with the procurement procedures, policies, and approvals of the CJHS Operations Department.
  • Assisting the CJHS Operations Department with program participant tenancy issues and evictions at CJHS owned properties.
  • Ensuring that participants in our program are being provided with timely service that meet the requirements of our funding expectations,
  • Contributing to annual and quarterly reporting for both AHRP and R4Y.

The scope of employment may include:

  • Sitting at a desk for multiple consecutive hours.
  • Transporting clients to housing related appointments and performing other duties in your personal vehicle - with compensation for mileage.
  • Arranging and/or assisting with moves and apartment maintenance which may require lifting up to 50lbs.(23kg)
  • Handling challenging and traumatic situations, including those affected by client loss, by applying crisis intervention techniques to de-escalate potentially violent or high-risk scenarios
  • Situations where you need to manage potential exposure to biohazardous materials.
  • Provide guidance and strategies to support the team dealing with direct or vicarious trauma.

Experience and Education:

  • Relevant degree or diploma from a recognized educational institution.
  • 2+ years experience in either property management or a non-profit housing program.
  • 2+ years supporting at risk individuals facing homelessness.
  • 2+ years of experience in leadership/supervisor role
  • A demonstrated history of thriving in fast-paced environments that require creativity and ongoing troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of the Residential Tenancy Act (RTA) is an asset.
