OVERVIEW: Reporting to the Education Program Specialist, the Teacher will provide a caring and supportive education environment for children and youth in the Shawenim Abinoojii school. The incumbent will design, develop, deliver, and monitor developmentally appropriate learning experiences in line with the Provincial curriculum outcomes. Children and youth will have the opportunity to develop cognitive, social, emotional, and physical skills. The Teacher will provide individual, small groups and whole class lessons and programming.

KEY RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Create and provide developmentally appropriate education programming; plan and implement curriculum and education for children and youth in collaboration with House parents, schools and other supports
  • Provide activities and opportunities that encourage curiosity, exploration, and problem solving appropriate to the developmental levels and learning styles of children and youth
  • Plan and prepare learning settings; supervise children and youth in the learning environment; provide supportive environment in which children and youth can learn and practice appropriate and acceptable individual and group behaviors.
  • Provide activities that encourage healthy growth
  • Exercise control and maintain classroom discipline
  • Provide a supportive and caring environment
  • Develop and present educational programs and/or workshops
  • Interact with parents and school groups; maintain open and cooperative communication with SAI staff teams and families, encouraging their involvement in the program and supporting relationships.
  • Write and compile individual assessments of individual development; complete daily inventories, attendance, and related reports.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Post Secondary degree in Bachelor of Education degree from a recognized Institution.
  • Must hold valid Provincial Teaching Certificate.
  • Experience working with Early Years children in a community setting
  • Must have valid class 5 driver's license, a satisfactory drivers abstract and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Must obtain and maintain current adult, child & infant CPR and First Aid Certification within 6 weeks of date of hire.
  • Must provide clear Child Abuse Registry, Criminal Record check and prior contact checks.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety procedures.
  • Experience working or volunteering with First Nations children and Youth
  • Knowledge of Traditional and Western child development theory and practice
  • Ability to evaluate, design and implement holistic curriculum, testing and teaching methodologies.
  • Knowledge of the Child and Family Services (CFS) sector and legislation an asset but not mandatory.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and/or understanding of Indigenous perspectives, First Nation's culture and traditional philosophies.
  • Strong Interpersonal and Communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
