Job Description: Automotive Service Technician Overview

An Automotive Service Technician is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, and repairing vehicles to ensure they operate safely and efficiently. This role involves diagnosing automotive issues, performing repairs, and conducting routine maintenance on a variety of vehicle systems and components.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Diagnostics and Troubleshooting:

    • Use diagnostic tools and equipment to identify mechanical and electrical issues.
    • Interpret diagnostic codes and technical information to pinpoint problems.
  2. Vehicle Maintenance and Repair:

    • Perform routine maintenance tasks such as oil changes, tire rotations, and brake inspections.
    • Repair or replace faulty parts, including brakes, steering, suspension, engines, and transmissions.
    • Conduct thorough inspections to ensure all vehicle systems are in good working order.
  3. Technical Skills:

    • Utilize hand tools, power tools, and specialized automotive repair equipment.
    • Read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and blueprints.
    • Stay updated with the latest automotive technology and repair techniques.
  4. Customer Service:

    • Communicate with customers to understand their vehicle issues and maintenance needs.
    • Provide detailed explanations of repairs and maintenance work performed.
    • Offer recommendations for preventive maintenance and future repairs.
  5. Safety and Compliance:

    • Adhere to all safety regulations and guidelines while performing repairs.
    • Ensure all work is performed in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
    • Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
  6. Record Keeping:

    • Document all services and repairs performed on vehicles.
    • Maintain accurate records of parts used and labor hours.
    • Use computerized systems to track work orders and inventory.
Qualifications
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a formal automotive technician training program is preferred.
  • Certification: ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification is highly desirable.
  • Experience: Previous experience as an automotive technician or mechanic.
  • Skills:
    • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
    • Proficiency with diagnostic tools and repair equipment.
    • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Attention to detail and commitment to quality work.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift heavy objects and operate machinery.
  • Prolonged periods of standing, bending, and working in confined spaces.
  • Manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination.
Work Environment
  • Work is typically performed in a garage or automotive service center.
  • Exposure to loud noises, fumes, and hazardous materials.
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required to ensure safety.
