The Director of Wellness reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for the overall day-to-day delivery of healthcare operations, ensuring that the healthcare services comply with the Retirement Homes Act (RHA) and other relevant legislation.

Responsibilities:

  • Assigns, delegates and evaluates the activities of the nursing department
  • Plans, assigns and oversees the Residents' health and personal care services
  • Participates in inter-professional assessments in identifying Residents' needs and develops an individualized plan of care, ensuring that the resident is receiving the level and quality of agreed upon care
  • Implements and monitors quality improvement
  • Meets with Residents/Families to resolve problems and concerns
  • Organizes and participates in the Resident care conference on admission and at 6 monthly intervals or as the condition of the Resident changes
  • Maintains accurate and complete health records
  • Reviews pre-medical assessments to ensure that the community is able to provide the care
  • Serves as the Infection Prevention and Control Coordinator for the community
  • Responsible for the recruitment of nursing staff.
  • Completes performance appraisals of nursing staff as required
  • Provides ongoing nursing staff education
  • Maintains the staffing schedules
  • Responsible for the documentation of the residents' care needs, through care planning, bi-annual reviews and incidental charting.
  • Assumes responsibility for medication administration, narcotic control, application of treatments and dressings, transcription of Physician's orders, reordering of medications, writing phone orders from prescriptions and other clinical skills. This also includes ordering of lab and X-Ray requisition ordered by the Physician.
  • Ensure Pharmacy audits are complete and reviewed with the nursing team to improve performance and outcomes.
  • Attends care conferences with the interdisciplinary multidisciplinary team with residents and families, when necessary
  • Oversee communications with families on medication changes, health status changes and concerns. Coordinates medical appointments and staffing, transportation, and any follow up required from these appointments.
  • Attends to adverse health changes of residents, assessments, communicates with Physicians, and transferring of residents to hospital, and follows up with families.
  • Reporting of critical incidents to RHRA, including documentation in the care plan, and informing the Executive Director of the incident.
  • Oversee the new admission processes, consents, assessments, care planning and documentation requirements for RHRA.
  • Coordinates and interacts with contract providers for services that are required for residents, including set up and removal of equipment.
  • Promotes the Vision, Mission and Values of the Home and the Residents' Bill of Rights
  • Other duties as assigned and or indicated in Job Task Inventory

Qualifications:

The qualifications needed to join our family are as follows:

  • Current registration and in good standing as a Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Current CPR & First Aid Certificate
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office
  • 3 – 5 years of leadership roles in the senior housing industry
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Retirement Homes Act and other applicable legislation
  • Effective communication skills
  • Familiar with the provisions of the Occupational Health & Safety Act
  • To show evidence of being focused on people's feelings when interacting and knowing how to turn a task into positive social interaction
  • To undertake and meet all legal requirements within a context of promoting individuals' rights and measuring/reducing elements of risk
  • Must provide a complete and current (within six months) Vulnerable Sector Check (including a Criminal Background Check) or be willing to obtain one
  • As a condition of employment, candidates are required to submit documented results of TB testing (within the last six months or within 14 days upon hire) or a chest X-ray (within the last year), as per Public Health requirements
  • Two supervisory references required
  • COVID-19 vaccination is a condition of employment
