Introduction:

ICES is currently seeking a Communications Associate to join our Communication Department. Reporting to the Director, Communications, the Communications Associate plays a key role in achieving ICES' communications objectives through disseminating digital content, both internally and externally. The Communications Associate is also responsible for meeting the organizations in-house design needs.

Responsibilities of the position include, but may not be limited to:

  1. Monitor and maintenance of the ICES social media (e.g., LinkedIn and X accounts); creates engaging content, develops strategic ideas and tactics for building ICES' social media presence and outreach on an ongoing basis;
  2. Develops and implements analytic measurement, evaluation tools and mechanisms to monitor media and social media coverage to demonstrate positive organizational impact beyond immediate coverage and share results with the ICES Executive team, the Board and broader ICES community;
  3. Support internal communications initiatives and provide ideas to better strengthen the ICES community;
  4. Support the ICES communications strategy by acting as an integral member of the communications team, providing input and expertise towards all communications initiatives;
  5. Completes in-house design deliverables, including infographics and social media graphics;
  6. Tactically support strategic KTE campaigns for targeted ICES manuscripts and reports and support the production and dissemination of various products to be used in those campaigns, including videos, infographics, briefing notes, research summaries and other promotional materials for dissemination to different audiences;
  7. Identify relevant external stakeholders for KTE campaigns, contribute to positive and mutually supportive relationships, and anticipate and respond to their needs;
  8. Support internal education and consultations to facilitate KTE, grow the KTE program to meet the needs of ICES, and engage in knowledge sharing activities at the organizational, system and national levels;
  9. Compile and maintain inventories of knowledge translation/evidence-informed best practice literature tools, resources and capacity building materials;
  10. Work collaboratively with ICES scientists to optimize messaging for KTE deliverables and to ensure broad outreach to relevant partners and stakeholders;
  11. Evaluate KTE programs and vehicles on an ongoing basis; revise and refine efforts to ensure maximum effectiveness and impact;
  12. Work collaboratively with communications team members and provide input, cross-coverage and assistance as required;
  13. Bring ingenuity and creativity to the broader communications department at ICES, including the development and implementation of new ideas, products, initiatives and processes;
  14. Other duties as may be assigned within the scope of this position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities required:

  • Certificate or diploma in Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, Communications or related field;
  • Three or more years of directly related communications experience; healthcare sector or research sector experience is an asset;
  • Demonstrated experience with designing and implementing KTE initiatives;
  • Develop social and digital media messaging and manage analytics and metrics;
  • Strong social media management skills including Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and LinkedIn;
  • Basic design skills in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop;
  • Needs to be a self-starter, creative/idea-generator and experienced in taking complex content and making it accurate, concise and eloquent;
  • Public relations, editing, proofreading and writing skills; proven technical and persuasive writing skills;
  • Ability to adapt style for specific mediums, voices and formats and distill complex technical content for a general audience;
  • Collaborative working style with demonstrated success in a team-based environment; Familiarity with scientific literature, including statistical information, and experience with translating research materials into lay language for both general and targeted audiences;
  • Organizational skills and the proven ability to support multiple projects, workflows and timelines; Ability to work independently and reliably and take initiative;
  • Familiarity with provincial and national health care, research and policy organizations; Computer proficiency including Microsoft Office;
  • Social media competence and experience;
  • Video and photography skills, including editing, are an asset.

This is a full-time permanent opportunity.
