Location: Villa Marguerite
Hours of Work: Monday: 8:30-1630; Thursday: 8:30-12:30; Friday: 8:30-16:30

This will be a Unionized Permanent Part-Time Position
JOB SUMMARY:
The Personal Support Worker is a multi-functional team member, assisting Residents in supportive living. The Personal Support Worker provides support to assist with preventative healthcare, health maintenance and quality of life. Assistance may include but is not limited to the following: facilitating life skills, improving relationships, using alternate communication skills and supporting the team with other related duties to enhance the care of the Resident and the safety of the environment.
REPORTS TO: Resident Services Coordinator
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develops and maintains respectful, cooperative working relationships with the Residents. Able to effectively problem solve basic psychosocial and health related Resident concerns.
  • Demonstrates an ethical approach to Resident care and uses tact, diplomacy, and courtesy in all interactions. Respects the values and beliefs of Residents and families and the right to confidentiality, privacy and dignity. Follows all guidelines for the provision of care and reports otherwise to the Resident Services Coordinator
  • Resident safety, in conjunction with the Resident and/or families is paramount to manage the safety of suites in collaboration with the Resident Services Coordinator
  • Preparing suites for pest control services.
  • Assist Residents in social activities recognizing each person has their own strengths, preferences and support needs that may change over time.
  • Provide 1:1 assistance with a variety of activities of daily living to encourage and support Residents' to stay as independent as possible. These duties may include: cleaning, finding recreational activities, personal care, support for safety in the home, helping to encourage new relationships, shopping trips, and accompanying to appointments.
  • Maintains confidentiality in all things pertaining to the work environment. Ensures to follow the rules of FOIP and HIA and adheres to Park Place Pledge of Confidentiality. Never discloses personal information regarding Residents, visitors or Staff Members in a public area. Never discloses personal information about Staff to Residents.
  • Attends mandatory education and in-services as scheduled. Attends Staff meetings and in-services.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
HEALTH AND SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Responsible to ensure all staff read, understand and comply with PPSL's and provincially-mandated Occupational Health and Safety policies and safe work practices.
  • Takes the lead in all aspects of the Health and Safety Program including:
    • Uses safe work procedures,
    • Infection Prevention and Control designate,
    • Educates and enforces the fire and safety regulations with all employees,
    • Promotes health and safety policy and awareness,
    • Corrects unsafe conditions and practice among employees,
    • Makes safety suggestions.
    • Reads OHS minutes posted.
  • Responsible to take every reasonable precaution to protect the safety of Residents, self, other workers and the general public.
  • Reports any near miss, injury, accident, or equipment damage to supervisor immediately and completes required reports.
  • Corrects and/or reports unsafe conditions.
  • Sets a good example.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Graduation from a recognized Health Care Aide program or Psychiatric Aide Program
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention
  • Suicide Prevention Module
  • Secondary Education based on a Psychology framework
  • Experience working with Mental Health and Dementia Clients
  • Clear criminal record security clearance with Vulnerable Sector included (no more than 6 months old)
  • Must have a valid Driver's License and vehicle.
SKILLS AND ABILIITES:
  • Clarity in writing and speech as a way to convey pertinent Resident assessment information.
  • Able to work well under direction.
  • Must be physically fit to perform lifting and transferring and able to be on your feet for long periods of time
  • First aid considered an asset
  • Flexibility to relate to and anticipate changing Resident needs.
  • Well developed reasoning and problem solving skills

Physical Demands:
The Personal Support Worker position requires significant amount of lifting, walking, reaching, bending, pushing and sitting. In an average day the employee spends 2 to 6 hours standing or walking. Lifts a maximum of 50 lbs., frequent lifting and/or carrying of 20 lbs. Must be able to manage stressful work situations with dexterity.
