The Research Scientist (Plant Breeding) focuses on various plant breeding research, that aligns with the organization's strategy initiatives and goals. The role will execute the breeding methodology for a species or group of species, with the goal to create innovative and competitive varieties that can provide Bioriginal with a strategic advantage or edge in the market. The role works closely with business development and marketing, to understand where business opportunities lie.

Responsibilities & Expectations:

  • Sets up, coordinates and administers breeding programs based on current line development pipeline templates and defined company objectives and priorities.
  • Executes breeding objectives within a defined resource and company objective scope.
  • Designs or participates in the trial plan for key products and markets.
  • Develops and maintains a well-planned breeding program that is balanced and provides commercial products for key markets and business opportunities.
  • Plans, develops and manages assigned budget.
  • Stays current with technology developments in pertinent sciences and introduces innovation to breeding program where appropriate.
  • Stays current with leading competitors' product lines, varieties, and strengths and weaknesses.
  • Strategically collaborates with key external partners on breeding and technology projects.
  • Maximizes the use of all resources allocated to the breeding program.
  • Supervises and manages breeding assistants, technicians or contract workers;
  • Other projects and duties as assigned.

Desired Qualifications:

  • PhD or Masters in Plant Breeding, Genetics, Agronomy, Crop Science or related field of study with minimum 3 to 5 years' work experience with managing a breeding program.
  • Strong business acumen is required.
  • Strong background in plant breeding, molecular genetics, field plot technique and statistical analysis, molecular biology and molecular marker applications.
  • Familiarity with data science and computer programming and a demonstrated ability to perform data analysis with large datasets.
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively to achieve common goals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage a successful commercial plant breeding program.
  • Ability to manage more than one project in a rapid and smooth manner while being able to interact and communicate with research personal from diverse disciplines is necessary.
  • Proficiency to publish findings in well-recognized peer-reviewed journals.
  • Familiarity with fatty acid and lipid analysis, and strong background in plant fatty acid biosynthesis and lipid pathway.
