ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for a dynamic and passionate Principal who loves Northern Living to join our team for the 2024-2025 school year! The Principal will oversee the daily operations of the Elsie Fabian School. The main functions include staffing matters such as hiring and coordinating staff schedules, developing and implementing the curriculum, and establishing and administering various school policies. The Principal will work directly with students, teachers, staff, families, community and other external agencies to ensure that academic and cultural goals are met. The Principal is responsible for the overall success of the school. This individual must be able to interact with staff at all levels in a fast-paced environment, while remaining flexible, resourceful, and efficient. This is a full-time salaried position based on seventy-five (75) hours bi-weekly, located in Fort McKay, AB.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Understand and support the Education Authority strategic plan.
  • Lead school staff towards the goal of providing a strong Cree Language, Dene Language, land-based learning and academic program with a focus on literacy and numeracy.
  • Provide leadership in all matters relating to education at the Elsie Fabian School.
  • Meet with the education committee to report the status and progress of the school.
  • Ensure that effective and appropriate educational programs are delivered to all students.
  • Hire and coordinate schedules for staff to optimize efficiency and workplace satisfaction.
  • Provide a safe and caring environment that fosters well-being and maintains respectful and responsible behavior for each student.
  • Develop and maintain positive and effective relations with surrounding schools and board departments.
  • Ensure that the fiscal management of the Elsie Fabian School is in accordance with FMFN's annual budget, and other applicable grants.
  • Provide leadership in the development and review of a multi-year strategic plan, in accordance with FMFN education goals.
  • Establish effective communication strategies to keep Elsie Fabian School informed of key information such as reports, student, volunteer and staff successes and board decisions.
  • Participate in community affairs in order to enhance and support the Elsie Fabian School.
  • Demonstrate positive and proactive leadership that has the support of the staff with whom the Principal works most closely.
  • Complete other duties and projects as assigned.
KEY REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's Degree in Education is required, Masters or doctorate level preferred
  • Certified Teacher and Administrator
  • Minimum of Five (5) years teaching experience combined with five (5) years of experience as an Administrator/Principal.
  • Extensive experience working in a First Nations community including knowledge of First Nations culture, traditions and values is an asset
  • Ability to speak, read and write Cree and/or Dene considered an asset
  • Clean Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector required
  • Valid class 5 Driver's License & Clean Driver's Abstract required
  • Successful candidate will be required to live in (or relocate to) Fort McMurray, Alberta

The Elsie Fabian School opened its doors September of 2022. The school has incorporated both the Dene and Cree Language, culture, and Land-Based Education where students learn about their rich local history.
