OVERVIEW:

Reporting to the Support Work Program Manager, the Family Support Worker collaborates with the holistic circle of care, maintains timely documentation, and utilizes a relationship-based approach to empower families on their journey toward resilience and healing.

The Family Support Worker at Shawenim Abinoojii is dedicated to providing compassionate and culturally sensitive support to individuals and families, fostering safe and nurturing environments that honor First Nations identity and values. Through facilitating family visits, assisting with daily living skills, and implementing personalized support plans, the Family Support Worker promotes positive family dynamics and advocates for the well-being of all involved. This role actively engages in assessments, interventions, and advocacy efforts to ensure access to resources and services that meet the unique needs of each family.

KEY RESPONSIBILITES:

• Facilitating and supervision of family visits to ensure a safe and supportive environment for all involved.
• Supports youth in the development of their daily living skills, based on their needs and goals.
• Conducting assessments to identify the specific needs and goals of individuals and families and developing personalized support plans accordingly.
• Implementing strategies and interventions to promote positive family dynamics and enhance communication and conflict resolution skills.
• Monitoring progress and outcomes of support plans, adjusting strategies as necessary to ensure continued effectiveness.
• Providing in-home support services, including assistance with daily living activities, household management, and transportation.
• Advocating for the rights and well-being of individuals and families, ensuring they have access to resources and services that meet their needs.
• Liaise with the SAI Wellness Unit to facilitate access to services and programming based on the First Nations identity of our people.
• Fostering a safe and supportive environment that empowers youth to explore and respond to their emotional and psychological needs.
• Complete and submit required service documentation, including daily logs and incident reports.
• Utilize a relationship-based approach to deescalating and responding to emergencies as they arise.
• Maintain timely and effective communication with the holistic circle of care to support the care of youth.
• Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Minimum of two years related experience in the helping field.
• Strong understanding of approaches to supporting life skills development.
• Knowledge of community-based resources.
• Knowledge in the areas of Addictions, Attachment, Mental Health & Trauma and how it impacts young people.
• Knowledge of the Child and Family Services (CFS) sector & foster care legislation.
• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of First Nations experiences, culture and philosophies.
• Demonstrated skills and competence to establish supportive relationships.
• Knowledge of assessment and crisis intervention.
• Ability to work flexible schedule in order to accommodate the needs of the youth.
• Satisfactory Child Abuse, Adult Abuse, Vulnerable Person Check and Criminal Record Check.
• Excellent communication, organization, problem solving, and team skills.
• Ability to speak Anishinaabe preferred.
