Who We Are

The work of Good Shepherd is based on a fundamental belief in providing hope and restoring dignity to the most vulnerable members of our community. Our services include emergency food transitional housing and education for homeless and street-involved youth; hospice palliative care; community mental health programs; and supportive housing programs. We are committed to integrating Harm Reduction practices into our programs and to prioritizing the rights, dignity, and choices of those who use substances. By integrating a Harm Reduction framework at Good Shepherd, we can decrease barriers to service and better support some of our community's most marginalized members.

This summer student opportunity is with our Good Shepherd - Youth Services, Hamilton.


Youth Services provides support to homeless youth ages 16-21 as well as parenting teen moms and their children. Staff members support youth to reach personal goals and to have a satisfying and meaningful life in the community. In this role you will work to make a difference in the lives of youth living at Youth Services. Services to clients include assessment, planning, housing, crisis prevention and intervention, supportive counseling, education, advocacy, social/recreational programming, life skills teaching i.e.: cooking and linkages with other community services.

How You Will Make an Impact

Primary case management and community development skills acquired through a post-secondary education in social services such as Child and Youth Worker. Some experience working with Youth would be helpful. Knowledge of and experience working in residential treatment for Children under the Ministry Guidelines are a plus.

What You'll Bring to Our Team

  • The successful candidate must be available to work all Youth Services locations and a schedule that includes rotating shifts (days, afternoons)
  • Must provide a valid current Vulnerable Sector Police Check and a one-step TB test
  • Knowledge of child development
  • Excellent communication, team-building, negotiating and problem-solving skills
  • Some knowledge of community resources for families
  • Fluency in French and/or a language in addition to English is an asset

Hiring Criteria - the following criteria is established by Canada Summer Job:

This temporary full-time position is funded by Service Canada for youth between the ages of 15 to 30 years of age.

  • Applicants may be more than 30 years of age at the end of the employment period as long as they were 30 at the beginning of the employment period.
  • As per the Summer Canada Jobs Program criteria:
    • International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada.
    • Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, youth visa or work visa are ineligible.
