Our Client is an employee-owned, award-winning, architectural practice firm with a proven track record in practical, innovative and economical design. During a history spanning over 60 years, our client has designed some of Canada's most notable buildings, primarily in healthcare.
Role

Our client is searching for a Specification Writer to join its growing team.
As a Specification Writer you will perform general specification writing and coordination of architectural specifications for various projects primarily in the Institutional sector (Healthcare, Justice, Detention, Education, Etc.)

Responsibilities:

  • Interpret architectural, engineering and interior design drawings and prepare specifications to be used as standards by contractors related to building construction activities.
  • Analyze drawings and details or diagrams, observe and makes notes on materials to prepare specifications for construction activities.
  • Write technical descriptions specifying material qualities and properties, utilizing knowledge of material standards, construction processes or manufacturing procedures.
  • Conduct quality reviews of construction documents while researching and preparing specifications.
  • Be aware of the products on the market, assisting in maintaining and developing the firm library of catalogues and other information for designers and architects to use.
  • Prepare project manuals including general conditions with an in-depth familiarity with the various CCDC contracts and client supplementary conditions.
  • Coordinate progress and bid set printing orders and assuring that documents are ready for printing, signing, sealing and distribution.
  • Develop specification requirements and solutions.
  • Work with project teams to develop documents throughout project phases.
  • Assist and mentor staff on technical issues for both project and specification related issues.
  • Function as a technical resource.
  • Stay current on product development, new materials, code changes and industry trends
  • Plan, schedule and attend educational lunch time events (Lunch and Learns) that are relevant to the practice of the firm.

Profile and Experience:

  • General ‘lifelong' learning attitude, and openness to learn about new ways of doing things.
  • Bachelor's degree in architecture, advanced diploma in architectural technology or another constructionrelated field.
  • Healthcare or institutional experience is an asset
  • Great written and verbal English communication skills
  • Excellent computer skills with an emphasis on MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), Adobe Acrobat and BlueBeam. CAD/Revit knowledge considered an asset.
  • Prior experience in building construction settings, including but not limited to architecture firms, architectureengineering firms, construction management or specification consulting firms.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, working with others in a team setting, communicating directly with other Specification Writers, Project Managers and Contractor contacts.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects at the same time and to manage time and resources to meet deadlines.
  • CSC designations such as CSP or RSW are a plus.
  • Knowledge of environmental and sustainability rating systems (LEED, Greenglobes, WELL, Etc.) is an asset.
  • Knowledge of building codes, industry standards, structures and materials standards
  • Previous experience working with, writing, or assembling specifications
  • Good researching and reading skills with the ability to deal with large quantities of data in search of precise information. Self-starter in terms of research and follow-through.
  • Current member of Construction Specifications Canada (CSC) preferred
